This is an oft-times overlooked film in the Kubrick canon, and that's something that is unfortunate. At the base, the story is a satire on injustice in the military / injustice in war. It takes on a number of themes all at once, and does so gracefully without ending up looking like a rudderless plot. Kirk Douglas plays a French colonel (Dax) in World War I. He is one of the few officers in the film who has genuine integrity. As such, he finds himself in conflict with the nefarious actions of his superior officers nearly as much as he is fighting with the Germans. This interesting remake of Jodie Foster's "Flightplan"... sorry, kidding. Hitchcock greatness is easy to spot in this 1938 comedy thriller. It starts with what seems a gathering of all European nations in an hotel somewhere at the foot of the mountains, with people speaking languages as if they were in Babel after the fall. Nobody understands entirely each other, and if they act nice, egoism surface when they must sacrifice an interest for somebody else. So, when a lady friend of our heroine disappears inside a train in movement, nobody wants to admit it. It reaches a point when we are not entirely sure the lady in question even exists. This is a film that really should suck royally. Think about it: Charlie Sheen, whose appearance has usually been a recipe for mediocrity; Kristy Swanson: anyone remember her for "acting" in anything else other than the Buffy movie? No, thought not. But you know what, this film is wonderful. so good in fact that it is one of my favourites ever. Both Sheen and Swanson are really likeable in their roles. But what makes it even better is the wonderful support. Henry Rollins and Josh Mostel are simply wonderful as a pair of purusing cops roped into a reality cop show. Mostel's rather resigned, anxious pathos plays fantastically against Rollins' rapidly unravelling messianic monomania. We rented the VHS about 12 years ago, when our kids were still kids. Not a film for the ages or anything, but almost perfect if your kids are between 6 and 10. Lots to please the kids, and - there is enough quirky humour for the adults. But the big bonus was, we wondered about that gorgeous locale and watched the credits very carefully . . . Kaslo, B.C. We went the next summer; stayed a week in a camp across the lake, and spent another week cruising the interior of B.C.& Alberta. I could go on and on, but suffice to say it was one of our most memorable vacations - kids thought it was great too. So - buy or rent the movie, and then visit Kaslo!
