I love me some Stanley Kubrick. I just wanted to say that, because in all honesty I can't think of a single director who has ever worked that has come close to delivering what Kubrick has delivered to cinema. Film after film, moment after moment, emotion after emotion, Kubrick is flawless and his films are as complete and as unique to him as they come. No director has come close to delivering as consistently as Stanley Kubrick, and no director has a style as unique to himself as Kubrick (sure, many directors have their own style, but Kubrick's style is definitive and incomparable). This is one of my favourite movies, yet it seemed to get lost back when it was released. Chris (Elizabeth Shue) is stuck babysitting when her best friend decides to run away from home and then has second thoughts, only she has no money to catch a cab home. Chris with kids in tow are left to rescue her, resulting in fun and adventure. Directed by Chris Columbus, (need I say more ??) it keeps moving at a great pace. Great for the kids, except for some course language, this should be (just about) enjoyed by everyone. Go For It !!!

Full metal Jacket is really two movies in one. The first movie is a very realistic journey through the boot camp process for the marines. The reason why its so realistic is that Kubrick found a DI who could act and let the process run as if it were real. The only flaw in it is the murder-suicide at the end. Its just not realistic. It would have been more belevable as an ordinary suicide. The other thing that didn't quite catch is that DIs and the process don't just punish the weak. They go after the strong ones too. The second half of the movie is worthless. The main character is suddenly made a journalist in Vietnam for a handful of pointless scences hanging around base and then just as suddenly is pushed into fighting in an infantry squad in Hue. If you like movies that are not the norm and kind of trippy, like "Another Day in Paradise", you'll love The Salton Sea. It's a trippy, druggy movie with a little twist. It's got some comedy, nice visuals, some action and it's just good.

This is a sensitive film about human fallibility amazingly done up in the guise of a comedy. Johnny Depp's Ed Wood's is terrific. He plays a miserably flawed and totally deluded man...He plays him with sympathy and some understanding. It would have been easier, no doubt, to have played him as a vainglorious fool, but the director and producer decided on a more complex character. Woods is a man totally, and mistakenly, convinced of his artistic excellence. He is so convinced in himself that he is able to convince others to invest in his ideas of cinematic art. I've rated Stone's 'JFK' 3 stars not because of quality or accuracy but because this movie had a major impact on me. In my first watching of this film, I detected at least one major, and I think deliberate, factual error. One of the characters is handing a Carcano rifle as another character says words to the effect, "The three shots took 7.8 seconds to fire. Let's time it." He then picks up a stopwatch and clicks, "Go." The other character, works the action [once], he works the action again [twice], he works the action a third time [three]. "9.2 seconds," the one man emotes. "Impossible." Well, from reading over reports of the shooting I knew that this scenario was an untruth.
