I actually bought this as a gift for my mother. She had been looking for it. We checked Amazon and there it was! We've watched it a few times already and love it!
Thank you for the ease of ordering and your selections are fantastic!

Save your money. I believed the other reviews here and bought this, trusting that this was a good collection; what a mistake that was. All of the operas are recorded from 1970-1980, and the sound quality is HORRIBLE. Maybe I've just been spoiled by contemporary recordings, but this is pretty bad. I found myself snoozing through two of my favourite operas, Don Giovanni and The Magic Flute, which I absolutely LOVE. These recordings just aren't anywhere near up to par with others that are available. I haven't watched all of them yet (and I probably won't), but the performances I've seen thus far (Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Seraglio, and Figaro) have all been mediocre at best.

I guess all I'm trying to say is, don't be fooled by the good reviews, and buy this set at your own risk.

Perhaps I'm missing something. But the story line was very slow and nothing much really happened. It was neither compelling, insightful, funny, and not even erotic, albeit it seems to be headed in that direction occassionally but never gets there. The ending was cute, but that pretty much sums it up.

I have viewed this lovely performance many times and find that it gets more wonderful with each viewing. The only thing that I miss is some kind of subtitle. Some of the words are not intelligible so much of the humor of the English translation is missed. The singers are all first rate with the exception of Valerie Masterson who is simply radiant. Her high soprano gets a bit thin on top but watching her one sees a consumate professional with a sweet sound who is so musical that she totally inhabits the character. There is somthing so disarmingly feminine about her that one cannot take ones eyes away from her. The staging is not traditional but is wonderfully tasteful and inventive.
This DVD seems to be out of print now but I hope it will be reissued WITH subtitles. The newer version of this ... Read More

Yes, I've heard Julius Caesar a number of times via NPR and have two CDs. I confess I gave this DVD only three stars because I don't yet "dig" it. While the costumes and scenery are stunning to look at (mostly) and while I understand that, like Idomeneo, the singers are costumed in what might have been expected in the late 18th C, it always strikes me as quite odd - I mean, all that labor and money when a couple of sheets might do very well.

I'll accept that Dame Janet is superb, but I believe I was expecting a more powerful voice (yes, I know that's dumb). I'm not crazy about counter-tenors, but in this case, I was surprised that I longed for David Daniels.

The English (and I bought it FOR that reason) was very off-putting and I very much missed the Italian. The English, to me, made ... Read More

As far as I know, this production has not ever been released before in any format, and that's a shame because this is a very nice 'Abduction,' with excellent singing, exceptional orchestral playing, and good visual and dramatic values. It also gives us a chance to see the work of some singers early in their careers. Most important of these, to me, is to see and hear Willard White, that wonderful Jamaican basso, as Osmin. He darn near steals the show with his characterization, immensely likable and funny. The only thing missing from his performance is rock-solid low notes; he really has to reach for those low Cs and Ds. As for the ladies in the cast, they could hardly be bettered. Valerie Masterson is a delicious, if slightly reserved young lady, Constanze, and her singing is secure and dramatically apt. Lillian Watson's ... Read More
