I am a huge Shakespeare fan, and HAMLET is my favorite of the Bard's work. So, logically, as a Shakespeare buff and an English major, you would expect Branagh's HAMLET to be my favorite cinematic version of the tale. Well, you would be wrong: Franco Zefferelli's HAMLET starring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close is my favorite, not Branagh's, and I'll tell you why: Branagh may be an immensely talented director with ground-breaking visions for Shakespeare's work, but he is an over-the-top and dreadfully melodramatic actor whose performances on screen are absolutely terrible. On stage, his moody, sulking, emo and whiny Hamlet would work because stage acting requires a larger-than life performance because as an actor, you have to perform to the back balcony, but on film that sort of acting doesn't ... "This story shall the good man teach his son; and Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, from this day to the ending of the world, but we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, this day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England now-a-bed shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

It seems pointless to add to the overwhelming supply of positive reviews for this film. But as Amazon.com requests it...

A review close to this one remarks that teachers should put down their books and show this movie to their students instead. I can not agree more. ... Read More

Nobody could say the storyline in Much Ado About Nothing is particularly clever. In fact, despite some very witty lyricism you would have to say this is one of Shakespeare's weakest plays. Having said that, this interpretation by Kenneth Branagh makes the most of the material. The comic characters are completely over-the-top (including Michael Keaton of Batman fame, and Ben Elton, creator of the Young Ones) and the more serious ones are given a slightly modern interpretation. The main plot which deals with the importance of virginity in a new bride, has a gently mocking modern treatment. The whole play is, as its name suggests, a storm in a teacup and Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thomson make the most of the sarcastic interplay available to them. Even the charming Denzel Washington manages not to stumble ... Read More

i have seen peter pan played by an adult woman (mary martin). also played by an adult man (robin williams). in the awful "hook" version.
peter pan was a "boy". (all boys grow up, except one) so they finally got that right. and everything else about the movie. the special effects and especially the flying was superb. beautifully made, and i enjoyed it so much i am thinking of buying another copy of it. i just wish there could be a sequel.

If you know Lester's work, you know that he makes lousy films that are sometimes funny. This is a lousy film which is sometimes funny. But the girls really have no talent. Victoria Beckham can sort of sing, but that's about it. Not much at all really.

Usually, I prefer my opera or play set in traditional production, with the time frame, costumes and cast as plausible and realistic as possible. This movie is therefore a disappointment to me at the very beginning, with the background set to 19 century Japan and the de Boys brothers played by black actors. Director Kenneth Branagh's leisurely pacing does not help.

Strangely, as the story goes on and the action moves away from the Japanese "court" to the forest, I find myself gradually swayed by the excellent performance of every actor in the movie and begin to truly enjoy some of the best dialogues from Shakespeare.

Branagh really does a good job bringing the best out of his talented cast. It is obvious that they are all having a fun time. But the most attention getting has to be the two leading ... Read More

Although this movie was critically and publically panned, I honestly think that it is the BEST film adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel. Critics complained about the film, saying that it was too grotesque, too melodramatic, too epic. What critics failed to realize is that THAT is exactly what a Gothic Romance story is: melodramatic, epic, exaggerated, but still wildly poignant. I am not a huge Branagh fan, but I love this film. The cast is excellent, the period setting is done beautifully, and the exaggerated sets and bright colors (especially the wide use of the color red)perfectly capture the scope of Shelley's novel. Yes, there are changes, but many of them I liked: Henry Clerval (the wonderfully quirky Tom Hucle) is not murdered by the Creature (played wonderfully by DeNiro) as he is in the novel, and Victor ... Found this through Netflix and loved it, so I just had to own it. The cast is sterling! It's a unique blend of musical, mystery, comedy, and several other genres, and it's just twisted enough that it works! Don't expect a traditional narrative, but open you mind and enjoy this unique and wonderful film!
