DVD : The Search for Robert Johnson
While this may not be for everyone, it is an outstanding look at the legend of Robert Johnson who himself was a blues legend. It is a search through the Southeastern US for the real truth about him and includes interview footage of people who knew him well. Fascinating material if you love the Blues.

I bought this as I am both fascinated and repelled by the British monarchy. The pomp and ceremony are quite interesting and way over the top (Christmas caroling to the queen's horses in the royal stables!). QE2 comes off as stodgy and not in touch with the real world. As an American, after viewing this DVD, I really cannot decide which is worse -- spending thousands of dollars for a toilet on a US government jet or having a guy on the government payroll whose entire career is dedicated to raising the flag once a week at the exact moment the Queen's limo is entering Windsor Castle. What a great gig! The volunteer bell ringers were also funny -- ringing away in honor of the birthdays of various members of the royal family. Very entertaining.

The film was recently presented at the Cinematheque in Paris for a debate on Jennings' work, with David Robinson and Elena von Kassel Siambani as debaters, and the participation of Stephen Frears. Stephen Frears' participation was disappointing because he did not say one single piece of his mind about Jennings. But the two other debaters totally missed the point by qualifying Jennings' war films as poetic. That satisfied the nostalgic audience but they completely missed the point. Too bad for our historians. They got lost and satisfied to be lost in the biographical elements and the historical events of the time, as if it were capital to know that Jennings was an aristocrat by birth. When we come across a film, or as for that any work of communication or art, any work produced by human beings, ... Read More

This is a very nice dvd, because many very good artists perform very goods songs. It's a pitty some songs of the concert are not on the dvd, but I still enjoy it very much.

DVD : Trudeau (TV Miniseries)
I was all enthusiastic about this at first, being a bit of a fan of Canadian culture generally. Not knowing much about Trudeau, I was hoping this could fill in a few blanks.

They made a decision when making this to film the four episodes of the miniseries (only chapter selection available on the DVD, incidentally, not episode selection) in different styles. The first hour or so, covering Trudeau's first election campaign, is shot in a jittery and tricksy way derived from early Richard Lester, while the second hour - the October 1970 kidnapping crisis - is in a more tense and documentary style, harking back to Costa Gavras, and so on. I'm sure they thought this idea was just way cool. I'm not quite sure it works, though. It means that viewers who, like me, are not thoroughly saturated ... Read More
