I had hoped for better from this collection. The "documentaries" are little more than highly costumed re-inactments that shed little light on their purported subjects. These are typical drivel, in that they show the same re-inacted scene repeatedly with non-informative voice-over unrelated to the ridiculous scene. There is no analysis, no real information beyond the most basic, lots of fighting and blood, lots of slo-mo and overacting, lots of camera "techniques", lots of costumes, lots of tense scoring. There's also lots of ridiculous dramatic set-up. For example, the Medici story tries to build up tension regarding the radical design of the Florence cathedral dome. Will it be built? Will it work? Is the architect mad? Is Cosimo Medici going to survive politically? It's ludicrous--we all ... Read More

The acting was mediocre. The story just wasn't what I wanted it to be. There is a bit of nudity which was unnecessary. I don't know which movie is closer to the book but if I had to pick one I would choose the newest one with Reese Witherspoon. It just had a better and more dramatic ending. The production was a decent one and that is the best I can give it.

It was very informative. Covers very good points dealing with "Egypt's Golden Empire." All the major pharoahs are included in this DVD.

The version with Charles Laughton is still unavailable on dvd and the Ian Richardson one is cost-prohibitive. So, after doing some searches on different versions of this movie, I decided on this particular version-- since Patrick Stewart is definitely one of my favorite actors.

He really doesn't disappoint here. He's excellent, as expected, and brings depth and empathy to the role of the Canterville Ghost.

However, everyone else in this production is more than bad. They are horrid.

Neve Campbell, in particular, can't act. She's a one-note actress and I'm surprised that nobody has told her to go take some acting lessons. She does this great tentative, unsure-of-herself, little girl smile thing, then she stops smiling (as if she's not sure a smile is appropriate), then ... Read More

I purchased this video hoping to learn more about dinosaurs and the paleontologists that enrich this prehistoric world for our families. I was not disappointed. This was a great look into a cross section of paleontologists' lives, their efforts, their disappointments, their failures and successes. Good education and entertainment for the whole family.

The ideal use for this DVD is to play the soundtrack on your computer while you are doing other things. It is apparent that Hollywood film directors are the shall, owest, least creative tribe on the planet, who equjate art with nakedness and have no imagination at all./ The one star is earned by the Verdi "Un Ballo" episode at the beginning which goes back to the attempted assasination of King Zog of Albania for a really thought-out tie in. Evderyhthing else visually on this disk is trash. The music selected is great and the singers are outstanding, with the tenor selection exceptional (no Pavarotti!) For listening only!

This modest British suspense thriller is on a par with an average TV movie. Set in London and allegedly inspired by a 1982 real-life incident, homeless street-dweller Alan Terry (Rupert Graves) witnesses a middle-of-the-night Italian-style gang-land murder down at the Thames River docks. The political/mob perpetrators become aware of his presence almost immediately, and the chase is on.

This reviewer likes Rupert Graves and would have liked to write a better review, but alas, it's a pretty non-memorable, dully-executed, poorly-paced and unsatisfying film. There's a reason not much is said about it as there's not much to say.

Originally widescreen with a 110-minute run-time as shown at Cannes (hat-tip to Variety for this otherwise obscured tidbit); this DVD release of the 1995 film ... Read More

In preparation for my upcoming trip to Egypt, I rented thirteen different films about ancient and modern Egypt. This particular entry, from PBS, was my favorite. It was informative, well-produced, and did a great job of covering the sweep of New Kingdom history.

Of all the videos and DVDs I watched, this was the highest quality, and probably the only one I would want to purchase for my own collection.
