DVD : The Secret Garden
After reading The Secret Garden by F.H. Burnett for the the first time as an adult I viewed all English versions of the movie. By far the Hallmark 1987 version of The Secret Garden is my favorite. What a charming cast of character actors, enchanting cinematography, and splendid music. I give this version of The Secret Garden two thumbs up. More thumbs if I had them. CMM 12-08

I'll have to admit that I bought this little piece of cheesecake because it was only $3.33 and the good looking little Brit lasse on the cover was showing off some of her handsome flesh. But what I got was the most depressing and sordid life story of a supposed real life English prostitute. The film made an attempt to give a sympathetic late 20th century presentation of her life. But I saw through it and believe me I didn't sympathize at all! I found the lead character to be the most unpleasant, disfunctional mess of a human being that no one would ever want to encounter. I could only sympathize with her father and a host of her victims whom the film went to pains to discredit. So much for late century revisionism. I was forced by Amazon's rating system to give at least one star but if I had a choice ... Read More

DVD : 10 Rillington Place [Region 2]
Story of serial killer John Christie and the wrongful execution of Timothy Evans in the 1950s. Subtle performance of main character and supporting cast, character depth and quality of direction are in contrast to the typically sensational films of this genre. Setting (filmed at the location of the events) and detail recreate the working-class poverty of postwar Britain. Similar in tone to "Vera Drake" (2004).

4.Romeo and Juliet [Region 2] starring: Leonard Whiting, Olivia Hussey, John McEnery, Milo O'Shea, Pat Heywood (II)

DVD : Romeo and Juliet [Region 2]
Zefferelli has brought this classic love story by Shakespeare to the screen. He makes it so simple, the language, and highlights this with an exeptional cast. With Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting, both young newcomers at the time, in the leads, you become entranced with their love story and conflicts. This is Shakepseare at it's best. Although Henry V, Othello and Hamlet were all good films, this one is breathtaking to watch. Zefferelli followed this with Burton and Taylor in The Taming of the Shrew, also excellent. Hats off to Zefferelli.
