Having been a huge fan of Laurel & Hardy for over 30 years now, I have always avoided their later films with Fox and MGM like the plague. All I ever read was how awful they were, and how they were a poor reflection of the team's glory days at the Hal Roach Studios.

I finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase this set to see for myself, and I'm happy to say it was a wise decision! It's true that the three films in this set, plus the three in the second set, are not The Boys' best work, but neither are they the travesties that many authors paint them.

"Great Guns", their first post-HRS film, is the weakest in this group. It has some good moments, but as Randy Skretvedt's audio commentary notes, the one-liners and snappy comebacks were better suited for Abbott ... Read More

When the production code came around, movies got cleaned up, and that included gangster movies. In consequence, gangsters could not be glorified, so James Cagney went from hoodlum to the side of the law in G-Men. This is the story of the beginning of the FBI. Cagney plays Brick Davis, a former lawyer who turns to police work after his friend (Lloyd Nolan) is murdered in the line of duty. Brick grew up in the slums and was given his break by a gangster so he knows how the underworld works. That makes him a great cop. It is up to him to round up the top ten most wanted men in America and with the help of menotor Jeff McCord (Robert Armstrong), he can do it.

An entertaining movie, G-Men is nothing too significant. It seems more like a Warners programmer than anything with plenty of stock actors. ... Read More

Jane Bradford is a small town girl lured into a life of big city vice by dope dealing mobster Nick. Jane's brother Eddie comes to the city to look for her. But soon he too is seduced into drug use by his coke sniffing girlfriend Fanny. A third subplot involves a rich party girl named Dorothy who likes to hang with the bad boys at the Dead Rat Cafe. In the end, Nick "gets his" though what happens to Jane and Eddie is left up in the air.

This drug related exploitation film differs from "Reefer Madness" in many aspects. For one, the potential perils of cocaine use, such as addiction, job loss and financial downturn, are depicted somewhat more realistically though still melodramatically. What makes "Reefer Madness" so hilarious is how it exagerrates the effects of weed on human behavior to the point ... Read More

Bill Holt (John Miljan) is a famous detective. He is on vacation and borrowing a house on Glen Athol. He is invited and practically forced to go to a party in the mansion next door. A wickedly flirtatious girl Muriel Randel (Iris Adrian) tells him of all the skeletons in everyone's closet. She seems to be some sort of scamp that uses everyone including the detective. It seems to be an early night as the detective goes home to finish a book he is writing. The scamp is exhausted and goes to bead early. All is well.

Bang! Bang! Shots heard. That night the butler mistakes a nephew (guest) of being a burglar and shoots him. Soon other bodies are found and the simple minded police pin it on the nephew. Our detective without overtly playing his hand must find out the truth.

Be sure to concentrate on the first ... Read More

Prime dreck from the Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC); MISS V FROM MOSCOW is a fascinating wartime thriller, filmed in 1942, which briskly plays out it's 66 minute running time and manages to entertain thoroughly.

B-movie queen Lola Lane plays Russian spy Vera Marova (code-named `V') who adopts the persona of murdered German agent Greta Hiller and goes behind enemy lines into occupied Paris to glean top secret military information. Her life in constant peril, `V' infiltrates Nazi headquarters and wires back the vital information to Russia before her cover is finally blown . Glorious B-movie nonsense from PRC, the most notorious of the `Poverty Row' film companies.

Lola Lane is a delight and her spunky, ballsy heroine holds together the whole film nicely. A former Warner Brothers contract player, ... Read More

The ad for this film states that you will be kept guessing until the end as to who the real killer is.

Not. I was able to pick the person out within the first 10 minutes of the picture. That's really neither here nor there, but if you are looking for a shocking surprise, you won't get it from this movie.

To be fair, however, this is a better than average crime flick with good acting all around and the comedic moments are less dated that most from similar films of the era.

There is a lot of good tension in the middle of the film and the revelation of who did it works well.

This film has it all as far as I'm concerned.

Up front, I need to say that I'm a HUGE fan of old black-and-white mystery/suspense films... so, if you're NOT such a person, this movie probably isn't going to turn your crank.

But, for fans of the genre, this one offers darn near every great old stereotype that has been seen to date (but no darting, beady eyeballs from behind portraits, dang it!).

Zucco operates an old isolated hotel (The Black Raven, by name) near the eastern U.S. -- Canadian border where he is in business smuggling both goods and people back and forth across the border at a good profit. He is assisted in this dubious endeavor by his dark and somewhat mentally-diminished step-and-fetch-it, played by the great Glenn Strange (a frequent portrayer of the Frankenstein Monster in various ... The movie's a treasure. Watch for the scene in which Lily Palmer thinks she's tracked down Crackerjack and finds he is magnificently prepared to receive her. Clever, witty, and well acted.
