I've waited for a release of this movie for twenty years. " BUT ", the waiting was invain. My old VCR (worn out) tape may not have as good a picture, but at least "it has all the words" !!!! This video skips the most important offencing words. What, is this show rated PG now when it comes to words like "Barbarian"? ( Before the duel at the theatre of Burgogne ). And further on it skips and goes mute in the most intricate parts of his verbal attacs. I am very sad and will have to keep searching for a complete rendition of this ever so romantic and amazing show.

I have close to 30 Bogart movies on DVD/VHS and "Dead Reckoning" may be
my favorite, behind "The Big Sleep" only !

The noir style along with the best dialogue I have ever heard and it doesn't get much better than Lizabeth Scott.
Always wondered what this movie would have been like with Lauren Bacall.

A Bogart masterpiece !

I was amazed at the power of this "old" movie. Made in 1937, in black and white, obviously, and acted in the over-the-top style that was in vogue in those days (pre-Actors Studio). Yet, dated though some of the aspects of the film are, the message is timeless and certainly is apt for this moment. I won't retell the story, as others here have done a good job and many readers will already know the events on which the film is based. It's certainly worth seeing and pondering how the message applies to today. Zola said, in the end, "Truth is marching on and will not be stopped." Let's all drink to that!

Jules Dassin directed, in my opinion, two great dramas that happened to be crime films, Night and the City (1950) and Rififi (1955). Earlier, he made two near-great crime films, Naked City (1948), a little dated now, and Brute Force (1947). For me, Thieves' Highway (1949) pauses right in the middle, both in terms of the year made and in terms of the success of the story. The movie tells us about Nick Garcos (Richard Conte), who returns home from working at sea with presents for his family and his fiance. He discovers that his father, a long-haul produce trucker, has lost his legs in a trucking accident after delivering tomatoes to produce broker Mike Figlia (Lee J. Cobb) in San Francisco. It looks like Figlia also stole back the money his father had been paid by Figlia. Nick is determined to settle scores. He sets ... Read More

The film begins with a teenager who breaks a glass window to steal a pistol, and is caught. As a boy he killed a young chick with a BB gun. The judge is told about this boy's fascination with guns. Is it caused by the lack of a father? Bart likes to shoot guns. He needs a new environment to help him grow up. Years later he returns to town. They visit an old-time carnival, entertainment for the small towns of America. [Would OSHA allow those working conditions today?] Bart is a good shot. The clown explains how this carnival fleeces their customer. Bart learns about personal relationships. But this couple seems to be doomed because of their poor choices. After a series of robberies the police start gaining on them, and learn their names.

They want to flee the country so they plan the perfect job. Will they be always ... Read More

DVD : The Gambler
Yes, indeed: I agree that the overlooked gem THE GAMBLER is well worth your time. It's one of James Caan's very best performances, and the best look at what makes up a gambling addiction ever put on screen. Karel Reisz, director of MORGAN! and THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN, gets right to the grit of the street, which is where Axel is truly at home. Oddly enough, the character which feels the most for the downwardly spiraling English professor (aside from his mother) is his first bookie, Hips, played by the wonderful Paul Sorvino. Hips tries to get Axel out of his self-destructive whirlpool, but in a telling scene, comes to know that Axel is well aware of where he is going. Like Nicolas Cage in LEAVING LAS VEGAS, Axel sees his future clearly. And in the final shot, we, the audience, know absolutely that Axel understands his future, ... Read More

DVD : The Spanish Earth/400 Million
really interesting double feature. spanish earth: . not one car chase, no sex, blood, hard techno beats or guitar solos. one corpse actually, a war, some peasants and a bakery. a time capsual from another era. documentary, somewhat styleised but interesting for it. hard to give it marks out of 5, it is what it is. if you want an insight into the spanish civil war and an unglamerous perception of the time, and if you want a perspective on those who were involved in the making of the film and why, this is a cool piece. 400million is more dynamic but still a period piece and fascinating for it. i cant find a reason not to reccomend these. again, they are what they are. 5/5. go buy these pieces of history.
