Just as in "Les Miserables", Frederic March really was this young once. The avuncular actor of later films won't be found. Here March portrays the split personality of both a kindly, idealistic London physician and the raging maniac he creates in his lab. Dr. J was filmed in creepy black and white-that lost art. The special effects are truly shivery as the good Jekyll transforms into the evil Hyde before the viewer's very eyes. Director Mamoulian keeps the pace frantic as March morphs from Jekyll to Hyde and back. The female leads are central to the plot. Both Miriam Hopkins and Rose Hobart are superb. MH is the racy, "pre Code" bar girl who Jekyll befriends and Hyde abuses. An old "Variety" review claimed that Hopkins played her role with "a capital sense of comedy and coquetry". She certainly had personality. RH is Hyde's proper ... Read More

This is one of those movies I didn't expect to hit me the way that it did. I love Hepburn and MacLaine and so I was anticipating finally getting to sit down and watch this film, but I truly had no idea what to expect. Hepburn was such a wonderfully light actress, an actress who filtered in and out of breezy comedies with such effortless charisma, so I was expecting something a little less dramatic and little more entertaining. What I got instead was one of those films that socks you in the gut and leaves you pondering issues and consequences that never seem to leave your head afterward.

`The Children's Hour' is haunting.

The film tells the story of Karen Wright and Martha Dobie, two young women who run a boarding school for young girls. Little Mary Tilford is quite the troublemaker and is constantly finding herself in ... Read More

Musical: From Broadway to Hollywood
Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

The Criterion Collection has released LUBITSCH MUSICALS, an absolutely delightful 4-disc boxed set that contains a quartet of director Ernst Lubitsch's very risque' musical-comedies that he made for Paramount between 1929-1932.

Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald each star in three of the films. Interestingly, although the performers make an engaging couple on screen, the fact is that they did not like working together. When it came to doing THE MERRY WIDOW at MGM in 1934, Chevalier felt double-crossed by Lubitsch, because the director had promised him that MacDonald would not be in the picture, then reneged.

The movies in this collection are definitely dated, but they are still a lot of fun to watch. Being a Chevalier ... Read More

Muddled but good story. Seemed unable to decide where it was going, but great performances by gret actors make it a keeper.

Film: **1/2 _____ DVD Transfer: ****1/2 _____ DVD Extras: ****

Through no fault of her own, "Old Acquaintance" is definitely one of Bette Davis's lesser vehicles from the late 30's through the early 1940's, certainly not up to the standards set by "Jezebel", "Dark Victory", "The Letter", "The Little Foxes", "The Man Who Came to Dinner", "Now, Voyager", "The Watch on the Rhine", and "Mr. Skeffington". In those superior films, Davis had the advantage of top flight scripts, formidable supporting casts, and superb production values in terms of directors, cinematographers, costume designers, and composers. In "Old Acquaintance", she is saddled with a sappy screenplay, a lackluster leading man (the bland John Loder), an unmanageable co-star (Miriam Hopkins who overplays her every scene to the point of embarrassment), an anachronistic wardrobe and hairstyles ...
