After being in her shoes I think this movie is beautiful. Hilary did a great job of portraying the emotions that one goes through and did so beautifully. Life goes on around you, but you have to make the choice to step out onto the sidewalk.

Yet another five-star review for a Mira Nair film. It's apparently the only rating I'm able to give her. This is based on a novel that I haven't read yet, although I'm a big fan of the author. The DVD blurb identifies it as an "epic family saga." Yep. It covers a longer time span than the other Mira Nair films I've seen. Brilliant characterizations of its people and its two settings, India and New York. Funny and touching; very perceptive of human nature; brilliantly written, acted and directed. I'll be watching this one again, which is what's so good about owning DVDs. Once in a while you find one that you want to hang onto.

This really is an example of beautifully simplistic filmmaking. There are no real villians in this film, but there aren't any heroes either. What is so refreshing is that this movie is just about people. People that you know in your real life. Sometimes they are witty, stometimes they are wise and sometimes they do ridiculously stupid things because they don't know what else to do. These are the players in the film. It is set in a nondescript small town in New York and is pretty much about two siblings, whose parents died when they were very young, who are trying to pull themselves out of the rut that their lives are currently in. "Highly entertaining albeit thin journalism thriller" is the line from the product description ... I could not disagree more! It is, indeed, noir-less, and it does pack a ton into it's twenty-four hour time frame but this is a really good ensemble movie. The dialog carries the story along effortlessly and, for me, the mark of a good movie is the use of real characters at every level of the story ... even the air conditioner repairmen seem to be more than bodies adding to the realism of a busy newspaper office. My favorite minor character is Robin, the extremely young photographer ("how old is Robin ... fourteen?") sent out to photograph the perp-walk pertaining to a highly volatile story that could lead to race-riots in the Williamsburg section of NYC in July. well since i stared in this movie (10 years ago) i can't really say that it's bad, but it's also not fenomenal, it's just an average movie suitable for kidz aged bet. 7-12 yr old. there were more scenes in this movie that for some reason haven't been included in this final version, and i really don't know why...since it took us whole days to shoot, but oh well.....bottom line is for its price the movie is better than most, even better than some highly publicized hollywood movies.
