One thing it might mean is that this is one of the most unique science fiction films ever made. I recently watched it with my wife (who very rarely enjoys any kind of sci-fi), a friend, and that friend's wife (who simply detests all sci-fi). Yet everyone enjoyed it. (My friend and I had already seen it.)

"This means something," is a recurring line throughout CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, similar to "I've got a bad feeling about this," in the STAR WARS films. So, the dialogue is not the best ever written. But CE3K contains a human element interwoven throughout both the character development as well as the plot development that you're unlikely to find any other science fiction film, and certain not to find in any other UFO film.

I know this is an Oscar winner and that it's got tons of fans but I felt like this movie was being force fed to me. I get it: Racism is bad and coupled with coincidence, its worse. To it's credit, there are some touching scenes between the Michael Pena character and his daughter but it wasn't enough to save the film. I'm not sure how other people don't see it-this movie feels so much more contrived than it should. Paul Haggis' other script, 'Million Dollar Baby', is equally forced and contrived, both stories seem to eliminate logic and subtlety in a way that makes it's potential meaning feel shallow and trite. I'd recommend 'In the Heat of the Night', 'American History X' or 'Amorres Perros' over 'Crash' any day. The latter of those three is not race-related but it's three tales all take place around ... This is a great DVD with the extra scenes in it bringing the book more fully to life Don't get me wrong I adored the original but this is better. I think the music is fine and not at all distracting. Highly recommended.

DVD : Beautiful Girls
Beautiful Girls is an ensemble comedy, with star power to burn. Hutton and Sorvino are both Oscar winners, while Dillon Thurman, and Portman have Oscar nominations. The title of this movie, Beautiful Girls, should clue you in to what it's about. It is a celebration of the beauty of women, but at the same time, it is also a cautionary tale about how men put Beauty on a pedestal that sometimes interferes with them making a commitment to a mature adult relationship with a real woman. In spite of the stellar cast and lofty premise, it probably went straight to DVD. I have no recollection of this movie being released theatrically. I thought that because of this it would be a big stinker, but it was actually quite good. I have a few theories about why it performed so poorly at the box office:

It had ... Read More

An amusing and tender-hearted take on self-discovery and acceptance of differences. Every cast member is terrific: Kline at his best, Cusack incredibly funny, Reynolds seniorly sparkling, and Newhart -- well, Newhart.

I give this movie A++. The black and white effects are really cool. All effects were done by hand, no generic computer special effects. Most importantly, the writing and story was excellent with poetic tones. I feel in love with this movie and it will always be one of my favorites.

Along with a terrific cast this is a fun movie from the 1980s with decent clothes and music that doesn't age it badly. Backdrops are of Chicago and you see a couple scenes that Chicagoans will know like the loop, and the Picasso sculpture in the Civic Center Plaza. Several of the cast were kids then and have now grown including Makepeace, Baldwin, and Dillon. Be sure to keep an eye peeled for a young Jennifer Beals of "Flash Dance", not listed in the credits. This is a story about a new kid that is bullied for lunch money by a group of locals. In comes a very large and intimidating kid with stories of murder and mayhem that all the kids are afraid of but the new kid. He immediately approaches this large kid with a questionable past and ask him to be his bodyguard. It takes some convincing but he finally agrees. Don't miss this ... Read More
