This is one of the best Christmas Movies released in a long time. A soldier with literally no one to return home to received a Christmas Card that he treasured. Upon his release from the service he is compelled to find out who this person is. Unfortunately he finds that this person is engaged however he was asked by their family to assist at the family business and slowly becomes a part of their lives. The family has no idea that he received a card from their daughter however come to love him very much. Watch this movie - better yet purchse the movie because the cool thing is they include a Christmas Card (seriously) that you can write in and that will be sent to a U.S. Troop and who knows can make a difference to someones life. The little theater is doing a version of this after Christmas so I wanted to see the movie first. If I was younger and could sing I would audition!

But it will be interesting to see how the play compares to the screen version!

I remember reading about Pia years ago. Apparently her husband (ex ?) has millions of dollars and was willing to make her a well known movie star and invest in her career. However, there was a huge backlash of those who felt she was paying her way to stardom. Her movies were panned and many critized her abilities.

Tonight, I watched Butterfly, and I thought it was riveting. Pia stars as Kady, a young woman who returns to the father she never knew and attempts to get him to steal silver from the mine he is guarding. Stacy Keech plays the father and other talented actors like James Francisco round out the cast. Pia looks gorgeous and convinced me with her acting. She has talent, looks, ability and star quality. She is totally believable as Kady, generating heat, youth and a knowing ... Read More

The film begins on the balcony of a luxurious penthouse apartment in New York City overlooking Central Park. An obviously wealthy, Jewish businessman, Arthur Goldman (Schell) is pontificating about seemingly random subjects to his loyal assistants. At first, he seems just eccentric but then you being to question his sanity. The line between sanity and eccentricity blurs even further as he sees his father (murdered in Auschwitz) working a food cart on the street below and as he begins to act paranoid over a blue Mercedes he believes is watching his apartment. Then, suddenly, two men (Israeli agents) break into his apartment and arrest/abduct him for being Adolph Dorf, the SS Colonel in charge of the concentration camp where Goldman's parents were killed. The scene moves to a jail cell in Jerusalem where ... Read More

A watch, a pension, a round of applause, and the good Marshal is ushered to early retirement. You'd have a blank look on your face too. But maybe not as blank as the goon who replaces you. Very enjoyable to see where this movie wants to go. But best of all is the scenery! And the smell of hot tobacco spit in the fire of life...

DVD : Naked City - A Death of Princes
I am giving this DVD collection four instead of five stars because I don't believe it represents a collection of the strongest episodes from the Naked City TV series. It starts out strong with the excellent "Death of Princes" but it is my personal opinion that the following three episodes shy in comparison and are disappointing, especially "Bit a Diamond" which I forced myself to watch to the end. Is it worth buying? Yes! And I would buy it again. Just for "Death of Princes." The opening episode has one of the greatest opening sequence of all of them. The photography is pure genious. And the simplicity and brevity of the narrator's "reaching up... reaching out... and reaching down..." and how it ties in with an equally strong epilogue narration. You just have to see this episode to appreciate one of the most ... Read More

The general theme of this second set of five plays-on-film is the misery of family life.

KINO'S AMERICAN FILM THEATRE series is a pricey, space-consuming three volume collection of 14 movies. That's the down side. The rest is all good! These stage plays (adapted to film between 1970-'75) are nothing short of superb. You get the finest works of the greatest playwrights, as rendered by top-notch actors and directors. Audio and video transfers of the restored movies is also first rate. It's a collection ideal for lovers of theater or for any fan of classy cinema. Highest recommendation!

AMERICAN FILM THEATRE: COLLECTION 3 contains Galileo (Brecht), Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (Blau), Lost in the Stars (Weill) and Philadelphia, Here I Come (Friel).
