Frank Capra's meditation on the connections each man builds to those around him is the pure, distilled essence of holiday spirit. In a world that's forever beating us down with reminders of our isolation and of the lack of meaning in our lives, this is a bright and shiny rebuttal.

I don't know that anyone but Jimmy Stewart could play the nice guy who always does the right thing and inject that character with the darkness necessary to turn a schmaltzy premise into a profound statement of each man's place in his world. A great supporting cast (including Thomas Mitchell, Gloria Grahame, Ward Bond, Henry Travers and Beulah Bondi) led by a brilliant director. Nicely remastered print. And while the extra features were just lifted from 80s TV broadcasts, they do have interesting information ... Read More

There were a few years in movie making when sound was first introduced but the Production Codes had not yet been in force. These codes would severely limit the ability of movies to depict the real world: sex, violence and corruption were toned down - often to the point of sheer blandness. Crime could never pay, authority figures were always forces of good and even married couples were confined to twin beds. There were those few years, however, from the late-1920s to 1934 which was known as the pre-Code era, a period that offered films that would be much more daring than the movies of just a few years later.

TCM's set, Forbidden Hollywood Collection, Volume Two, showcases five such pre-Code movies. On the first of three discs are a pair of Norma Shearer films. In The Divorcee, she won ... Read More

I am from the era of Shirley Temple movies. It's great that I have an opportunity to purchase these volumes so easily and with prompt delivery. I have my favorite movie but still want to have these in my "library", maybe for my granddaughter.

David O. Selznick and director John Cromwell give epic treatment to this story of the war back on the home front. No one's really great in this one. Claudette Colbert and Shirley Temple hold their own and Monty Woolley is better than usual. However, you may cringe at Jennifer Jones's performance when she's usually so good. And the black-face lines they feed to Hattie McDaniel are embarrassing, though she manages to make her character into more than the script would seem to allow.

But somehow it all holds together, taking us through a year in the life of an American family while Dad's away at war. The undertone of sacrifice and perseverance during hard times is compelling. And, by 1944, Hollywood had created such a rich mythology around the war that a movie only needed to make quiet references to people's ... Read More

The only film in this set whichI have not yet seen is Karloff's "The Mask of Fu Manchu," so I shall not comment on it as yet. The other films are at least enjoyable, some great, but my main interest in purchasing this set was Bogart's "The Return of Dr. X." Legend has it that this was Jack Warner's punishment for Bogie's protests against being typecast by the studio. I remember seeing it on TV, on a program called "Chiller Theater," and it impressed me from the very start, not merely because of Bogie's offbeat role as the murderous-medico-brought-back-to-life. It is in fact a taut, fast-moving and chilling tale, for the most part very well acted (superbly by John Litel as the well-meaning if obsessed hematologist who revives Dr. Xavier (Bogart), and stupendously by Bogart as the cruel, chilling child killer physician who ... This has always been one of my favorites westerns, although I never went to the trouble of getting a DVD version, until it came up on my Amazon recommendation list. I ordered it right away, and received the usual good Amazon service, and quick, free shipping, and have not been disappointed. Gregory Peck is one of best actors, and makes the movie, playing the bad guy this time, instead of his usual hero role. I can personally recommend this movie, going against a number of the negative reviews that are posted here.
