"The Mikado" is arguably the most-performed of all the G&S operas. The current stage director of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Austin and renowned G&S scholar Ralph MacPhail said that not a day goes without the Mikado being performed somewhere in the world. I don't know if that's true, but "Mikado" is without question a very popular and frequently-performed comic opera. In addition, there are many different takes on it. There's Red Mikado, Hot Mikado, Swing Mikado, and recently the Mikado Project.

This version, with Monty Python's Eric Idle as Ko-Ko, is set in a seaside resort in the 1920s. (For those of you not familiar with the plot of Mikado, see my comment for a link to the G&S archives, as they summarize it far better than I could.) The setting, a 20s resort instead ... Read More

This isn't an opera that you'd watch once a month, but it's entertaining enough to watch once. The cast has wonderful singers who are certainly well-known to opera lovers. The lead role of the pilot is sung by Teddy Tadu Rhodes, who is perfectly cast for both his sweet baritone and his good looks.

Michael and Mark Polish play conjoined twins Blake and Francis Falls, who start this movie in a run down hotel room in a big city. They'd come to find their mother who had offered them for adoption at birth upon learning of their deformity.

In the opening scenes, we meet Penny, a prostitute who has been called by the brothers. This is one thing I never understood about this movie - it is rated "R" yet there are no sex scenes in it, however this movie isn't one for the "PG" crowd either because it does take maturity and understanding.

As the movie proceeds, the bonds between Penny and the brothers grow.

I can't say enough about how touching and sweet this movie is. This is not my usual sort of interest when it comes to films but it is brilliantly executed ... Read More

I would recommend that if you are interested in the life of Johann Strauss Jr., you can look up a really well done biography movie by Walt Disney from 1963, and it is called "The Waltz King". In my own opinion I feel it is a much better movie. At this time it is only available on VHS, but one can only hope.

I have viewed this lovely performance many times and find that it gets more wonderful with each viewing. The only thing that I miss is some kind of subtitle. Some of the words are not intelligible so much of the humor of the English translation is missed. The singers are all first rate with the exception of Valerie Masterson who is simply radiant. Her high soprano gets a bit thin on top but watching her one sees a consumate professional with a sweet sound who is so musical that she totally inhabits the character. There is somthing so disarmingly feminine about her that one cannot take ones eyes away from her. The staging is not traditional but is wonderfully tasteful and inventive.
This DVD seems to be out of print now but I hope it will be reissued WITH subtitles. The newer version of this opera ... Read More

I was startled to find such extreme negativity in some of the customer reviews of this version of ARIODANTE. More than any other opera on dvd I've seen, it showed me that I could make emotional contact with the situations and characters in Baroque opera. I've watched it a number of times and it was one of very few dvd's that I am not currently in the process of unloading by selling them. This is, for me, a keeper!
