Where's Cecil Beaton when you need him. When you have the greatest singers of the last half of the 20th century, Nilsson and Corelli, you don't need all this excess! The Met has toned this production down shortly after this broadcast. This production is so busy I hardly even noticed the singing. You'll find every thing you need on the stage but a basket ball court.

For ages I have been familiar with this opera, and once upon a time designed costumes for it, too. This version was somewhat different, but very good. The settings didn't always appear as though it was the cigarette factory or the café of Lilas Pastias, but the acting was good and the singing excellent. Not a recent production, it still shows how good Jose Carreras is. Unfortunately Samuel Ramey didn't seem as convincing as Escamillo as he could have. Though a smaller role, it is nevertheless very important to the story.

The music of deutsche grammophon has always been well known and looked for and overall it is hard to fault the Metropolitan and these performers. James Levine leads the ever fabulous orchestra as well. I give it at least 4 stars.

If this is the Decca CD. Look else where. After trying 3 of them, having the same problem with Act 2. I finally just bought a VHS tape, which works and sounds great.

One star for the price and one star for the trashy film making, zero stars for everthing else, thats how I'm going to have to rate this package. If they could have cleaned these up a bit I would have given a five star rating. I liked the movies just not the visuals as the picture looked so bad in some scenes I couldn't see a thing they were almost completly black. I don,t mine a little bit of a grainy look. The Beat up film sometimes adds to the charm but dude really this is just unwatchable in some parts. What a shame cuz they were pretty funny. I 'm glad I only paid 5 bucks other wise i would have returned it.

In my opinion this is worthy set of amazing masterpieces. The "Uno Ballo.." video quality is low, but here is nothing to do, it was recorded 22 years ago. But the singing is very nice. I like this set, I like almost everything of MET of this timeline. Most of the set are very best of very best.
As you can see in the reviews related to specific operas some of people like them for more some like them for less: it is a normal, somebody likes somebody not, but all of the records are milestones. The only disk, that probably is not my favorite is the " Requiem", but not because is something wrong with it, I'm just not a man of "requiems", it is all.
