This move is a great timeless Classic. Great acting and good music. I did not know what to expect with Lee Marvin and Clint Easwood, two that were better known for hard gunfighting movies, in a musical, but it is great. I recommend this for all families. It will remain a part of my movie library for future viewing.

There is good reason to believe that the reviewer M. S. Anderson is as right as right can be. Having just edited an encyclopedia concerned with the Old West, I can confirm that the professorial class is keeping this movie alive. After several months of reading seemingly hundreds of worshipful citations of this routine film and especially of its signature cliché--the meaningless line about printing the legend when the legend becomes fact (as if newspapers routinely print the truth!)--I began watching (in vain, as it happens) for references to the film that pointed out that the sets looked like posterboard structures on the studio's back lot, the characterization was shallow and predictable, the script was trite and sounded clumsy on the tongue, O'Brien and some other supporting players were ... Only John Ford could do a trick like that! A gently amusing comedy (funny enough) filmed as a pretext of having a good time!... Also a family film (which is a great thing to have around). RECOMMENDED ADB PS: I only think Richard Lester pulled partially the same trick (partially) when filming HELP! with The Beatles... who choosed going to ski and the Bahamas for the sake of it! (they knew we teenagers back then would be going no matter what to the theaters to hear the songs and see them perform in colour... NO MTV back then).

This film is a strange one for me as I remember I actually hated it the first time I watched it years back but when I started looking seriously at old films and especially Westerns I began to appreciate "Cat Ballou" a lot more and now after seeing this a few times, I have to say that this is an excellent, hilarious spoof on Westerns and the jokes age very well even to today. As a big fan of all kinds of music myself, I really appreciated the role that Nat King Cole in one of his last performances ever before his death by lung cancer together with Stubby Kaye in the hilarious sung narrative that runs throughout the film. It's amazing what was accomplished on clearly a tiny budget and I thought the cast was very good and especially Lee Marvin was the alcoholic gunfighter. The dvd is also good value ... Read More

I've always enjoyed this movie, except for one thing. The actor who plays Willie Keith- Robert Francis- is awful. I think a wooden indian could have delivered a better performance. One of the plot elements of the movie is that Ensign Keith is well connected, Francis must have been as well, because he never deserved being awarded this pivotal role. Everyone else does a creditable job,and Jose Ferrer and Humphrey Bogart are outstanding. The movie ends just at the right point- not like Wouk's overlong book, where Keith takes command of the Caine.

It's great that this series is out in a full 117 episode box set, but whoever is responsible for the video transfers obviously didn't know what they were doing. 16mm syndication prints were the source elements for the transfers and if they were professionally done they would look far better than they do here. It appears that someone ran these off on a home system of sorts as there is no control over contrast levels at all. Sometimes the episodes have completely blown out contrast and are murky in the extreme, other times there is no contrast at all, with everything appearing a milky gray color. The prints are dirty, with hairs often getting in the gate and the sound quality is like mud on some episodes. This show was originally shot on 35mm film and if a proper transfer had been done, it could have looked glorious. ... Read More

"The Wild One" and not "Easy Rider" is the classic of bad boy motorcycle flicks (Sonny Barger of the Hells Angels describes Easy Rider as a movie about two dope dealers, not about bikers). This is a fun flick with the best part, IMHO, the viewer being able to retro back to the classic bikes and biker clothing of the 1950s. Brando and Lee Marvin play great little roles and as many believe it is Lee Marvin whose character is the forerunner of the 1960s outlaw motorcyclist in tenor and tone. Well worth the money and a keeper for the DVD shelf library.
