It would be difficult to overestimate the impact TOMMY had when hit movie screens in 1975, and if you were alive at the time you knew of the movie, knew of the stars, and very likely heard some of the music--whether you wanted to or not. It was ubiquitious; it was inevitable; it was also very exciting. But time, as one rock and roller once noted, was waiting in the wings. Seen today, TOMMY is less of a success than we thought it was at the time, a mixed bag of music, singers, and imagery, some of it very successful and some of it not.

The story is extremely, extremely loose, so much so that it pretty much fails to come to any meaningful conclusion. Generally, it concerns an English woman, Nora (Ann-Margaret) whose husband is killed in World War II. She thereafter has a son ... Read More

This has to be my favorite "music video" of all time. This is more David Lynchian than anything David Lynch has ever produced. It is such an odd episode in time, such a weird floating bubble of brilliance. It is a Festival of the Bizarre and the Hilarious. And, in my opinion, the music is superb. Approach this with the right expectations, and you will be dazzled!!!

For starters, the colors are super-saturated, rich and deep reds and oranges and blues. It is a warm viewing experience. Every attendee is wearing a truly strange pull-over type robe with bright colors. Everyone is preternaturally happy and involved. Coupled with all the other other-worldly behavior, one wonders exactly what planet this circus tent is on. Is this a rock show, or Star Trek?

Then we ... Read More

I was really taken by the Kids' performance on this one. Their voices were a bit raspy but hey, age catches up with us all. That camera take of good ol' Thunder Fingers (RIP) gave a true look at the Ox's unique way to play the hell of a bass. He will always be remembered. I was particularly pleased with Zack's drum performance (he's no Keith, of course... but he's excellent none the less), which brings me to to the fact that Keith wasn't even mentioned or remembered or not even a picture or something to his tribute. Pete's unique guitar playing was excellent as usual, even after all those years. The talent guests gave an excellent performance and adapted very well to the Who songs and were a nice treat. And best of all, it was for all those teenage cancer patients. Truly a remarkably nice gesture. ... Read More

Yes, this is an incredible Who concert. No, don't buy it. Make sure you buy the "special edition" instead because it contains two songs inexplicably cut from this release: "Substitute" and "Naked Eye". It says it's the complete concert. They're lying. The special edition isn't the complete concert, either, but at least it's all of the existing footage. The double CD set contains the entire concert. It's a shame that "Amazing Journey/Sparks" apparently was not filmed or has been lost. The performance of it on the CD set is extraordinary.

Screw Eagle Rock Entertainment and Murray Lerner for me having to buy this concert yet again just to get two songs that, by your own product's description, should have been included from the beginning. Your soaking of hardcore fans like myself is deplorable.

DVD : The Who - The Kids Are Alright (Special Edition)
And those Englishmen that I speak of are Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, better known to the rock world and their fans as The Who. In this 1979 rockumentary directed by Jeff Stein, the band is shown in classic clips performing some of their best songs. When it opens, we see them performing "My Generation" on "The Smothers Brothers Show". After the documentary's titles are shown, we cut to a clip of them singing "I Can't Explain" on what would be the last broadcast of "Shindig", ABC's evening answer to their ever-popular "American Bandstand". About a half-hour or so into the movie, we're treated to their electrifying performance of "See Me, Feel Me/Listening to You" at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. In between these rocking performances, we get to see the four men reveal ... Read More

I'm not sure what went wrong with the production of this DVD, but whoever signed off on it as a "professional, commercial product" most certainly should be shot. Repeatedly. In the head.

This DVD is unwatchable crap that looks like it was recorded using a cellphone camera. For example, anytime the camera points to the lights on stage, the video blows out, meaning that the band mates disappear into a blur of bright yellow. Of course, comparing this DVD's video quality to that of a cellphone's, is an insult to cellphones.

It was mentioned in a previous review that this concert was for charity, so if you're feeling charitable and want to waste your money, go ahead and buy the DVD and use it for target practice (a la "Success Story") but if you're looking for a good Who concert DO NOT BUY ... Read More

John does things that no other bass player could. I play bass and I was astonished with his ability. The song selection on this DVD is great. He plays mainly "who" material, and he sings
Trick of the light". I had my friend over and he loved the DVD too and went out and bought it. Some people are just blessed with talent and John displays it on this DVD. The band works well with him to produce a fun DVD. No negatives to tell you about. Just enjoy!

This disk is finally a release of what must be one of the top Queen live shows. Just the four of them, at the top of their fame and strength. Together with the Queen on Fire, this is a must have for any fan.

Freddie's voice is strong, amazing, no shortcuts, no compromises. The band just clicks together. Some beautiful performances here.

The video is very good given the age of the material, too bad more footage was not preserved to re-cut the show. Audio is flawless.

Commentary is entertaining, although best watched as subtitles (available in several languages), since the music is very quiet between the comments which are rather sparse.

Great show, probably the best live concert disk in my collection.
