A great reminder that true happiness is in loving and serving others. The movie brings this out without being preachy.

DVD : Contact
One of the outstanding movies of modern times, both good and bad, Contact is a production of the Carl Sagan novel of the same name.
What makes it one of the most irritating productions of all time (only Twister surpasses it), is Zemeckis' idea that the major players, James Woods, Angela Bassett, and Tom Skerritt all have to act like nannies to properly convey the script.

In one the worst performances of his career, James Woods is downright ridiculous from beginning to end. His obnoxious portrayal of a babbling and blabbering government agent about US national security interests and agendas not in line with his own has no depth and totally lacks personality. One of THE WORST scenes in the movie is when he notices a nazi swastika beginning to appear in the alien video transmission discovered ... Read More

I was in the mood for an old-school style murder/detective flick, and plugged this one in. 60 seconds into the film I get hit with a MAJOR "double" topless scene starring Reese Witherspoon (10 years younger). Gratuitous? Anyway, after re-gathering and re-trenching from that, I did indeed settle down into a Humphrey Bogartesque murder mystery.

Maybe the most significant mark of this film is the very heavy-duty cast . . . Paul Newman (aged like fine wine), Gene Hackman (the BEST), Susan Sarandon (hate her politics but enjoy her work, and again, a gratuitous look at her backside), James Garner (fortunately, no skin shots here), Reese Witherspoon (all of her), Stockard Channing (I don't care for her, personally, but she is a NAME).

A good whodunnit tale. Fading starlets, ex-cop private ... Read More

Other comedies might be funnier, but few compare to the nearly perfect total ensemble performance turned in by the principals, supporting and bit characters in Blake Edwards's Victor Victoria.

Julie Andrews plays Victoria, a down and out singer in gay Paris, circa 1934, who, with Toddy, dreams up a nightclub act in which Andrews feigns a male in drag to become the toast of Paris. Robert Preston's portrayal of the flamboyant gay veteran of the stage, Toddy, is perfect, sometimes cliche, but never over the top. James Garner plays King Marchand, a Chicago nightclub owner, who is taken by Victoria -- until she reveals she is a man -- but he isn't totally taken in by the ruse and so sets out to prove, as much for his own male ego as for the romantic spark he feels for Victoria, that the "he" Victor portrays is really ... Some AA members consider this movie a valuable asset. I found it shallow. It was a pathetic Hollywood attempt to review the lives of those who began the search for an alternative to hospitalization and death for alcoholics. It was a nice try, but it didn't work, and the way it ended was like diving off a board into a dry pool.

Enjoyable because of Julie Andrew and James Garner two of my favorites. I liked it, but it was disappointing compared to "It Happened One Night" which I do admit was more comedic in emphasis. I do not think the script was up to the romantic potential of these two stars.

Barbarians At The Gate focuses more on the personalities and egos that drove the stunning LBO of RJRNabisco. James Garner plays a role you rarely see him in, along with a terrific complement of seasoned actors illustrating the ego clashes and senseless competitiveness that typified the LBO scene of the times. Well paced, with a mix of a dramatic percussion-driven soundtrack with an almost light-hearted unique whistling soundtrack at telling moments, this movie holds your attention from the very beginning. The movie manages to lay out the whole event and cleverly illustrates the insanity without laying on thick judgementalism. You're hard-pressed to find whose greed and whose ego is bigger. A telling scene is where the Chairman of RJR agrees to pay KKR $45 million simply to wait another hour for the board to decide. The book goes into a great ... Read More
