The thing I love about movies is that five people can walk out of a movie saying what it's "about." Then they find that no two have said the same thing. So it didn't really surprise me when so many mainstream reviewers of this splendid movie were saying that it was "about teen pregnancy."

Well, sure, in a way. There are certainly people writing reviews right here at Amazon pointing out fearfully that Juno is giving teens a message that pregnancy is merely a happy lark. However, as Juno (the movie) was finishing up, I didn't find myself thinking that Juno (the girl's) situation was headed to Happy Town courtesy of a perky duet. The same 60 years that have taught me that a good song by itself won't get you far in the long run have also taught me that when it comes to guessing who ... Read More

I'd avoided watching Spider Man in the theatres because everyone told me it was too long, etc. As a long time Marvel fan - I enjoyed this a lot. I think this one hit the spot. Sam Raimi has made a love story cum heroic epic. The effects are spectacular (topping the previous two shows) and really reflect the comic book world that Spider Man comes from. The Sandman is pure Steve Ditko, and Venom's effects are brilliantly executed. Acting wise, Tobey Maguire and Mary Jane are the same - but this time Peter Parker has to deal with a Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde persona and a coterie of supervillains - just like the original comic. Let's hope there's a sequel...

Costner has made about 5 or 6 good movies, and three of them are about baseball. Bull Durham is the comedy, Field of Dreams is the spiritual, but For Love of the Game is the more realistic of the bunch.
Billy Chapel (Costner) is an aging veteran pitcher for a bad Detroit team in the twilight of his career who must decide on retirement, or accepting a trade. The movie takes place over the course of just 1 game, with back flashes of his relationship with Jane (Kelly Preston).
The movie touches on the celebrity of athletes, and the difficulties of having a normal relationship. I personally thought that the underlying theme was about choosing between a career or a relationship, but I'm sure it was probably deeper than that.
I have always thought that Costner was a bit of a ham who takes himself way too seriously, and ... Read More

I think the problem many people have with this film is that - unlike most moralizing Hollywood movies - it doesn't take a stand for or against smoking. While I think smoking is disgusting and practically crazy and I've lost count of the people I've known who died from it, I actually found this approach refreshing. It's essentially a cynical, amoral, libertarian satire on the American nanny state, corporate shills, and posturing politicians. In essence it boils down to this message: "Everyone's got a selfish reason for doing what they do and all information is skewed to the interests of the person providing it. Make up your own mind based on that. If you can."

Since I'm neither amoral or libertarian I was not thrilled with the main character (His motto: "If you argue correctly, then you're never wrong.") or with the way he ... Read More

Very few directors really understand the appeal of superhero comicbooks. It's a short list of successful superhero adaptations.

Sam Raimi was firing on all cylinders when he made this movie. The result is solid action-adventure with well developed characters that pull you into the story and keep you emotionally invested. The action choreography is stunning and the special effects are polished. Spider-Man 2 has a talented cast that really brings this story to life - with Alfred Molina being a particularly inspired choice to play Dr. Otto Octavious and J.K. Simmons delivering a larger-than-life J.Jonah Jameson. Some serious writing skill is in evidence here - the story has excellent pacing and a great sense of increasing stakes. There are moments of emotional gravity, but the tone remains light while delivering the goods at ... Read More

This was definitely a typical Hollywood portrayal of torture and rendition that I'm sure has gone on. I'm also sure that when authorities are out looking for suspects and leads, they undoubtedly come upon some that are false. I don't think they s/b tortured, but they shouldn't be given rights as US citizens either. I think this movie portrays the exception - a person who's been in the US for 20 years. What should be done? In this case he s/h/b brought in for questioning and detained. then released and watched. For others that have been caught like bin Ladens driver with missiles in the car, they should be imprisoned like he was.
