April 12, 2009 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Australian release of this film, which was later released in the US during the summer of 1980. Being nine years wiser since my original review posting to this website, I still can't understand why some one (perhaps George Miller himself) doesn't produce an uncut, definitive version of this film on DVD. However, since we're talking about a 30 year old film, personal priorities and what's happening in the world itself, perhaps there's no interest anymore in classic cult cinema. I sit here typing this message today while watching my DVD version of the film knowing that filmmakers are bound by certain rules when putting stories to film. However, one can hope and dream...can't they. Here's a hyperlink to a website that speaks to those cut ... Read More

I recall liking this movie in the old days. Not because of filmatic grandeur, but because of the wasteland setting and heroism. It's grim, it's wasteland, there is the football of the future, it's the loner against the establishment. All in all, a decent movie. Good entertainment. If you liked Mad Max, you'll enjoy this one.

The classic Jules Verne novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth, is brought to life in this movie. It stars: Treat Williams, Jeremy London, Bryan Brown, Tushka Bergen and Hugh Keays-Byrne. Directed by George Miller, it tells the story of a man named Theo Lytton who, along with his nephew, is hired by Alice Hastings to search for her husband who's been lost for over 7 years. She, along with a man named MacNiff, join the party on their trek that leads them deep inside Earth and eventually to its' center. Given, Miller has taken alot of liberties with his telling of the classic story as opposed to the book but, overall, Journey is actually a pretty good movie. Clocking in at around 4 hours, this is a movie that doesn't disappoint. At least, it didn't disappoint me. I loved the movie. Normally, movies of ... Read More

Didn't anyone on the set say, "You know, that whale's tail is retarded!"?

Moby Dick as a pure adventure story. How sad. Didn't anyone read the book? The deviations in this movie from the book are profound and completely dismast the story's importance. The director seems terrified of injecting mood and irony into his narration. His direction was uncreative and uninspired. What a waste.

Then there are all the sad details. For instance, sorry folks, Queequeg was not Maori. Wrong culture. Yes, believe it or not, the Pacific is full of very different cultures and Maori does not fit the Queequeg character. It's like making Ahab French. I preferred the 1956 Queequeg. Even though he was obviously a white actor, at least his character was indeterminate--as a character from Moby Dick should ... Read More

This movie is a good example of how fishing for tuna was done in South Australia. Nowadays the tuna is held in floating pens off the coast. This film can be slow in places but if you are interested in the old style of fishing with steel sqid jigs then you might enjoy it. More of a rent for the night film.
