This version of Verdi's Requiem has been
reviewed by opera fans much more
knowledgeable than I am, and I agree
with just about all of them. This is an
absolutely stunning performance
with four of the most beautiful operatic
voices of a generation.

While I originally purchased this DVD to
hear a youthful Pavarotti, I have to
agree with Mr. Kay that out of the four
superstars, it is Fiorenza Cossotto,
the mezzo soprano, whose star shines
brightest here. He cites her
performance in "Liber scriptus,"
but I'd like to add "Lux aternum."
The beauty, clarity, and range of
her voice in these pieces is simply
extraordinary.

It is at best Ok, average performance. The delivery of Beethoven music, probably because of BAD camera work is tedious and heavy. Since it is DVD I was expecting for more. I lost track of the music on third minute. If you are looking for great visual experience and Beethoven music see Beethoven Symphonies 1,2,3,4,5,6 and Art Galleries of the Time, 2DVDs+3CDs Ultimate MosaicDVD Collection
I can listen to the performance, but the visual element is very distracting. To my taste there's some lyricism in Beethoven symphonies. In this Karajan's version it sounds very harsh, straightforward.

'Nuff said. Get Carlos Kleiber (either one) or, even better, the very recent Georges Pretre.

By comparison with either Kleiber or Pretre, Karajan's approach is rigid, power-thirsty, cold-blooded, altogether unsatisfactory.

Robert Dornhelm's 92 minute film on the late, great Herbert von Karajan is informative, beautiful and elegiacal. More than any other question, it addresses what made Karajan (arguably) the supreme conductor of his generation and one of the towering musical figures of the twentieth century. Much rehearsal footage is included, as well as incisive, on-point, commentary by Christa Ludwig, Gundula Janowitz, Helmut Schmidt, Seiji Ozawa, Christian Thielemann, Brigitte Fassbaender, Yevgeny Kissin, Rene Kollo, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and others (gratuitous flattery seems absent). Karajan himself talks a lot in interviews and interacting with orchestras in rehearsal, generating thereby a feel for his artistry, one so inextricably entwined with his personality that it was never a transferable "method."

This is a wonderful dvd on all counts. The soloists are magnificent and well worth the cost of the disc which is very reasonable. The sound when heard on a good audio system is superb especially in DTS .Herbert does tend to over emphasize the dynamic range here as with all of his recordings , which means that one has to keep the volume control "at the ready" !

Wonderful to see the Coronation Mass sung in a liturgical context, though the focus in the video is on the music (naturally), rather than the pope celebrating Mass. Very moving nontheless. Not only is Karajan a great performer; John Paul is pretty impressive, too!

Ok my research was on this opera so don't you dare mark this review as not helpful (just kidding). First of all, Don Carlos is one of the most coherent operas in the Wagnerian sense where a motif underlies an event and tells the story as opposed to insipid Italian text. In the case of Don Carlos the friendship motif becomes the very core of the opera making four appearances each with its own meaning. This opera is the most meaningful of all Verdi operas. In philosophy, very close to Beethoven's ode to joy or Fidelio, but in music half way italian and half way Wagnerian. Bizet, if you respect his opinion, hated this opera. But I love it. I have played it all the way through. Ok but as for this production. The real Don Carlos is long, very long. Karajan boldy cut the entire first act. So go figure. But the production ... Read More
