An odd assortment of high school friends take a year off, wasting their time together, before the call of peer pressure fades as careers and girlfriends beckon. Steve Tesich won a well-deserved Oscar for best original screenplay in 1979 and the story is still as fresh as it was then, although these days, instead of going to college, Dave Stollar would be riding his bike professionally in Europe and making millions for doing it.
It's a coming of age film, with the four friends exploring the nature of friendship, peer pressure, the demands of society and the antagonism between the town kids and the college kids who come in from outside for their few years at college.
If you are into cycling, there is a story about winning (and a slightly twee ending to the film), accompanied ... Read More

These are brilliant suspense / shoot 'em up films. Classic stuff, and while the first is the best by a wide margin, they're all worth owning. Great fun.

The film was watched on a 50" Panasonic Plasma, and LG BH200 Blu-Ray player. The PQ was a 3.5/5 and AQ a 5/5.

The film holds up well for the time period, and the premise of the couple on the fritz caught up in an unlikely and dangerous terrorist plot, adds an edge that is still relatable in terms of realism. Bruce Willis plays one of his, if not his best known, role well and entertains with his diligence and "Boyscout" ingenuity. We enjoyed this film, but I could not give it 5 stars, due to its lacking Blu-Ray transfer.

This is one of Fox's better transfers for an older film, but the picture is not as sharp as it could have been. The sound however, was powerful and thrust the action forward with a crystal clear and thunderous soundtrack. I have not seen all of these parts ... Read More

It would have been better if they would have taken an extra 15 mins. and showed the true back story of Bruce/Batman. For those who don't know, they should have had a few scenes of Bruce going to the theater with his parents and Joe Chill shooting his mother and father and the aftermath of that and a little bit of his childhood. In the comics it is refered to quite a bit either in flashback or as a mini story at the begining. In Superman Animated it shows Kal-El/Clark going through his 3 episode beginnings with the death of millions so go figure! Joe Chill was only featured on the episode of Justice League Unlimited called For the Man Who Has Everything.

The whole production looks CHEAP, like it was made quickly for TV. I must say the flying sequences are very good but the story is a mess and really makes little sense at the beginning. Supergirl ends up traveling to Earth and decides for no apparent reason to put on a lovely new Supergirl outfit while on the way. Everyone, save Faye, looks completely bored with the whole thing. Wild things happen but people just look on in mild surprise or no reaction at all. Most people speak with a British accent where Supergirl comes from (I still don't understand where that is) and they just seem to walk around aimlessly. I think the cast is first rate but they apparently have no idea what to do. Is it the director's fault? The writing? I don't know. It seems like everyone is just going through the motions so they can get their paycheck ... Read More

Christopher Guest, the Master of the Mockumentary, takes a satirical look at movie-making by using the old movie-with-a-movie technique. We see a really bad, low-budget movie called, "Home for Purim" being made by a motley collection of actors, writers, publicists, make-up artists, etc. One by one the actors hear they might be on the short-list for an Oscar nod so they make the talk-show circuit and await the official announcement.

I liked that this movie was less a mockumentary and more of a straight movie; although writer/director/star Guest is known for having his actors improvise the dialogue, this seemed more scripted and conventional. It isn't as hilarious as Best in Show, but it's certainly cute and enjoyable throughout thanks to his talented troupe of actors, especially Catherine O'Hara and Fred Willard. Unfortunately, ... Yeap.. this a modern day knock off of "What a Wonder Life". In general, it was layed out well, the acting came off natural and the dialog was realistic. If you like this movie... check out "Groundhog Day."
