An angel comes to visit a bishop for Christmas, to guide him away from material things and toward a higher purpose.

With Cary Grant as the angel, this should be a better movie. But poor direction from Henry Koster and a disappointing performance from Grant leave it lacking. There's so much room for magic in this movie, but instead we get a heavy dose of cheap special effects. Still, David Niven and Loretta Young bring the story back to its true message and that always leaves my eyes a little watery. Monty Woolley turns in a respectable performance, too.

None of that explains why I find this movie so compelling. Maybe it's just that I'm a sap for the season. Maybe it's the small but lovely contributions of Elsa Lanchester and Sara Haden as the bishop's housekeeper ... Read More

The only problem I have with this DVD of "My Fair Lady" is that it is in letter-box format & it's too scrunched down for me to read the lips. Good thing I know the movie by heart PLUS it has "closed captioning". Other than that, my friend & I completely enjoyed the movie. It arrived SO QUICKLY & the price was SO affordable! I'll do all my Christmas shopping at Amazon!

"The untold want by life and land ne'er granted,
Now, voyager, sail thou forth to seek and find."

~"The Untold Want" from Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass"

It is perhaps one of Bette Davis' best films, one in which she reputedly became quite caught up in the role, playing an active part in the production decisions. Perhaps that is why the sets, costumes, and screenplay, as well as the flawless acting, raise "Now, Voyager" above the soap operatic level to a serious drama exploring the psychological implications of certain moral decisions. Although Bette could be convincing as a Southern Belle, playing New England spinster Charlotte Vale, a Daughter of the Pilgrims, suited her mannerisms and natural accent impeccably. However, it is Bette's ability to ... Read More

I don't know how anyone could help but love this movie! Fred MacMurray plays the character of Anthony Drexel Biddle (based on a real person by the same name) who is not only a loving father and husband, but an un-pretentious millionaire and patriot who doesn't care what others think of quirky ways. He teaches Bible-Boxing classes (learning to box while reciting scripture to song), has pet alligators, is a major influence to the military in time of war, and has a family and staff as quirky as he is. The music is a ton of fun by itself, and the rest of the cast is superb!

If you give this movie a chance as a lighthearted, comical Disney musical, I'm pretty sure you will come away singing all the songs and wanting to watch it all over again!

Though Gene Kelly is superb as the athletic strolling player Serafin, and is given some of the best dancing opportunities of his career, this is Miss Garland's film all the way. And what a film! How strange that it isn't better known.

In one of their rare moments of scenic largesse, Metro released Garland from the small town confinements of Hardy--ville, and/or the sweet girl who makes it to Broadway with the corn stalks still in her suitcase, and gave her something of genuine wit and sophistication.

For here, she is Manuela Alvarez, of the colonial Virgin Islands, a well born, cloistered 19th century maiden, (presumably convent educated, i.e., Gladys Cooper to Judy, "...we'll take refuge in the church!") whose only psychic escape from her self enclosure consists in fantasizing ... Read More

This is a tremendous drama, when you are in 'the mood' to watch a classic drama. Top notch cast & acting ! Rita Hayworth and Burt Lancaster and David Niven all stand out in this. The scenes with Hayworth and Lancaster just electrify the screen, you can feel the tension. Overall fine performances by all to be honest. This a great movie to watch on a nice quiet/lazy weekend. I very much enjoyed the story and drama in this. Watch this and see why it has the words Academy Award next to it.. Even though he had a smaller supporting role in this movie - the star of the Birds is in this - none other than the excellent Rod Taylor - here is a chance to see what he did before he achieved the top spot in the Birds..
