And so begins one of the most romantic movies of all time. Certainly, THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR qualifies for a secure spot in the top ten. This tale of an impossible, yet enduring love is timeless, pure, and tender - a movie never to be forgotten, a movie to be watched again and again, especially with those you love.

The story of THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR is well known. A young widow, Lucy Muir, her daughter, and their housekeeper, Martha, move into a spectacular seaside house. The house is haunted by the previous owner, Captain Gregg, a curmudgeonly old sea captain who begrudgingly allows Mrs. Muir and her small family to stay. Eventually, Mrs. Muir and the Captain fall in love. However, Captain Gregg soon realizes that Mrs. Muir belongs in the world of the living, and he fades ... Read More

Some early work by the charismatic Power, three with Loretta Young in 1937,along with seven other memorable films. My favorites are CAFE METROPOLE,the underrated LOVE IS NEWS,JOHNNY APOLLO,and the enchanting THE LUCK OF THE IRISH.Fox has commentary on most of their DVD's,but only four featurettes here.Still, the price can't be beat!Leading ladies also include Linda Darnell,Dorothy Lamour,Gene Tierney,Joan Fontaine,Anne Baxter,Ann Blyth and Simone Simon(debut)-quite a stable of beauties! Not much filler here,so pick this one up.

Fox seem to have a very creative marketing team because it is stretch of the imagination by any standards that this extraordinary package would be classified as a horror collection. True horror enthusiasts might be very disappointed.

First off is the 1932 "Changdu the Magician", a boys' own adventure which not surprisingly became a serial a few years later. The film has Bela Lugosi chewing the scenery with great aplomb as he steals a death ray and tortures its inventor to learn how to use it. Edmund Lowe, a matinee idol of yesteryear, is a stiff and far too proper hero but the film benefits from great photography and imaginative sets.

Next is "Dr Renault's Secret", a neatly directed programmer released in 1942 and with a fair gallery of supporting players, a moderately ... Read More

Ellen (Gene Tierney) is a beautiful, intelligent young woman. She is outwardly perfect in every regard. Unfortunately, she is lacking some things internally. Ellen has no conscience. She also lacks compassion, empathy, and a few other human qualities. Ellen lives only to please herself, by any means necessary. Along comes a handsome, successful writer (Cornel Wilde) who catches Ellen's eye. She wants him, but wait, she's already engaged to be married to another man (Vincent Price). No problem! In Ellen's mind, all she needs to do is remove her engagement ring and move on. She'll marry the writer now. This comes as quite a shock to both men involved. This is just the way Ellen thinks and lives her life. No one else matters. They are all mere pawns to help her get her own satisfaction. Sometimes these pawns get ... Read More

Its really difficult to hate any film with a stellar cast such as Ginger Rogers, Gene Tierney, George Raft and Van Heflin. For that matters, its difficult to hate any of their individual films. Bring them together for one picture and "hate" might be a strong word, but "indifferent" fits the bill. "Black Widow" feels more like a Cinemascope experiment than a cohesive and engaging film. Cinemascope was brand spanking new and you could tell that 20th Century Fox was attempting to churn out as much product as possible in every genre possible. No matter if the material was particularly engaging or the scripts particularly good, the studio seemed to think the public would embrace anything that was spread out on the Cinemascope canvas. "Black Widow" is testament to this. At 94 minutes there is very little here other than a scenery ... Read More

***** 1950. Based on a novel by William L. Stuart, WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS was produced and directed by Otto Preminger. A violent policeman, son of a thief, accidentally kills a key witness of the murder he must investigate. The father of the dead man's wife is charged with the murder while the policeman is feeling more and more guilty. A movie about ambiguity, about the fine line that separates the cop and the thief, the prostitute and the married woman, a genuine film noir. Outstanding Dana Andrews performance and a lesson of mise-en-scene by Otto Preminger. Masterpiece.

The sound on this Captain from Castile DVD was not what I had heard in the theatre! Instead off the rich surround sound it was dull and muted. Very disappointing!

On the Riviera thoroughly displays the amazing talent of Danny Kaye as he doubles most convincingly as an entertainer and the flirtatious fellow the actor is paid to emulate, since they look so very alike. Danny Kaye is one of the very few that acted from the heart and can carry you unabashedly to tears at the moment of painful truth with him or clown around and behave so absolutely slapstick silly you cannot stop roaring! Few actors have ever been so gifted with talent in all areas as this man and to see him in action is a great privilege, even from the movie screen. I love this movie, it is clean, quality family entertainment that will keep you simultaneously riveted and charmed. Danny Kaye is fascinating in every performance and Riviera is dinner and dessert all in one.

Imagine a film where dialogue was so taut and so well spoken that it became the central conveyor of the plot. That sort of film lives mostly in yesteryear, and it lives magnificently in "Advise and Consent", a riveting examination of the ongoing struggle between the basest instincts and noblest ideals of our elected officials.

The plot line is keyed to the nomination for high public office of a former University of Chicago professor accused of consorting with radicals. (Coming off the 2008 U.S. presidential election, does this sound familiar?) The nomination sets off the usual legislative maneuvering and partisan gamesmanship, convincingly brought to life by great ensemble acting and peppered with wonderful performances by Charles Laughton, Walter Pidgeon, George Grizzard and Burgess Meredith. (The establishing shot of Laughton ... Read More
