Bryan Bertino's debut film "The Strangers" is among the most frightening American horror movies I have seen released since 2000. Starting with a serious disappointment in "love", young almost newlywed Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) and her amazingly stoic would-be fiancee Scott Speedman (James Hoyt) retreat to their vacation home in a remote wooded area to get it together. After a close friend's wedding, Scott proposed to Kristen and was rejected. The symbolism is appropriate for the events to come--rose petals scattered around champagne bottles, the now humiliating box in which a marriage ring is held--beauty and security rejected and destroyed. Starts off very slowly, builds tension, then our heroes make some really stupid moves, but recover and gain the upper hand. Then they inexplicably lose the upper hand by making more stupid moves. HINT: If you have a shotgun and masked opponents have only hand tools, they are the prey. Put them down, fast. Sheesh.

The Shell Seekers This is a great adaptation of Rosamund Pilcher's novel, The Shell Seekers. Angela Landsbury does a nice job playing the main character. Great addition to any Pilcher fan collection.

Very disappointed in this movie, especially James' uniform. I found his uniform to be quite annoying. Did not care for the plot, very depressing movie.

This Ken Loach film leads to the kind of shattering emotional climax that fans of Rossellini will understand at once. Stay with this even if you are alienated by the setting and seeming desperation of the characters; unlike many of Loach's films, it does not end up leaving one with a sense of deep moral despair. If you are new to Loach, think of using English subtitles - but at the risk of losing something at the powerful climax. This is my favorite of all his films; I consider him a world class talent. Only Mike Leigh of the current generation of British filmakers is in his league.

Tom Skerritt plays as Howard Anderson, an American entrepreneur with a "passion for building" who is in process of erecting a tourist hotel in the Blue Mountains region, all the while unaware that his business partner, Julian Fane (Guy Doleman) has insured the incomplete structure for ten million dollars, far more than its actual worth, and plans its destruction as corollary to normal summer ...
