To Kill a Mockingbird (Collector's Edition)
Lone fathers and their kids have been a hit in many movies. I have severl examples, like, Ryan and Tatum O'Neil in Paper Moon, Jon Voight and Ricky Schroeder in the re-make of 'The Champ' and Dustin Hoffman and Justin Henry in Kramer vs Kramer. Gregory Peck, won an Academy Award, for playing a sole parent, and he's never been better. The script for this movie was based upon Harper Lee's sensitive and intelligent novel set in racially-torn Alabama. Gregory Peck, plays Atticus Finch, a wise lawyer bravely raising his two kids Jem(Phillip Alford) and Scout(Mary Badham) in the hot-headed Southern town. The crux of the plot is Finch's defence of a colored man accused of rape. The film was put together by two excellent film-makers, producer Alan J. ... Read More

Script is tight, handling is correct and the story taut.
Who would have known that a B&W movie would be so good.
There are no extravaganza stuff, no HUGE entourage for a president, etc.
Human emotions, and stuff.
And the ending is natural. Not some crappy heroic stuff where Bruce Willis saves the world.

This is a great movie, even though it's a bit slow and corny in parts. Anthony Perkins plays the son of Burl Ives, a man who's worked two wives into the grave and stolen the farm from one of them. Perkins has two half brothers he sends packing off to California in search of gold (this was set in 1840 when Perkins' character was a small boy, the 1850s or after when they're grown). Sophia Loren plays the beautiful new, young wife of Ives who marries for security. She and Perkins fall in love, and tragedy ensues. The ending is not a happy one for any of the three. Loren is gorgeous in her first Hollywood film, but her heavily accented English is hard to understand some of the time. Perkins is great in this as in any role he's played, and Ives acts out his tough, macho character perfectly. Almost perfect. ... Read More

Jeffrey Hunter and Robert Wagner, together in one movie. That's enough to send me running out of the room all by itself. The 1950's were an interesting time for Westerns, and we saw some good ones and some stinkers, too. Hunter and Wagner combined together in one movie would overpower any good that could possibly come out of it.

And this movie looks like the 50's, sounds like the 50's, was costumed like the 50's, was casted from what was available during the 50's, and takes horrific liberties with the facts, as many Westerns made during the 50's did. Does all this make this movie a "stinker". Well, I gave it two stars, and that was about right. I mean, moviemakers in the 50's didn't realize how stereotypical and shallow their movies were, so, in a sense, these movies weren't even Westerns ... Read More

I can see that the typical reviewer isn't impressed with the film... That's a pity. I suspect most of the reviewers are not British, and thus aren't "getting" the gist of the humour in the film.

Let me say first of all that OF COURSE this film is not high art. It's comedy - and very British at that. Sometimes it's plain silly, but very FUNNY plain silly.

I found the film amusing. There were many moments that had me laughting in that typically "Oh dear, I shouldn't be laughing" fashion that any Monty Python fan ends up perfecting. For example, the bit with the horse... the alien's arguments with the priest... the chastity belt... the wedding night... and the orgasmic finger.

If you can simply watch this film on its own merits, and if you enjoy Pythonesque humour, I can't see why ... Read More

That way everyone knows you are coming.

Formula movie as part the 50 Movie Pack Sci-Fi Classics DVD collections. Yes I know it is just another invisible strangler movie (title: The Astral Factor).

The story is of a deranged killer that has to kill any one the looks like his mother. To look like his mother all you have to do is look female and be in the tabloids.
