This film is a gem from the Hollywood era. Joan Crawford delivers a terrific performance as Mildred Pierce, a middle-aged women desperately trying to provide for her daughters as her marriage collapses. Told mostly in flashbacks, the film opens with a man being shot in a fancy Southern California beach house. The police pick-up Mildred and start questioning her, since it's her 2nd husband who is dead. Mildred recounts the ups and downs or her life and her inexplicable drive to win-over the love of her children, especially her spoiled, demanding eldest daughter named Veda.

The acting in Mildred Pierce is incredible. Crawford hits all the right notes as the workaholic mother with poor taste in men but a golden touch for running a business. She's almost overshadowed by Ann Blyth as the ... Read More

I've been watching the entire Otto Preminger catalog lately, and I got around to seeing what is arguably his most famous film. Seeing it again makes me realise that it's a masterpiece of tension, performances, dialogue, and cinematography.

There is so much to like about this film. Nothing here in the trial or the characterisations is present in black and white (there's even a dialogue by Stewart to a potential witness about how people aren't black and white). It is full blown ambiguity, resulting in a far more grown up and mature film than most current courtroom dramas are. It is also refreshingly un-PC, unlike modern courtroom dramas. I like to constrast this film with overblown, incredibly melodramatic shows like The Practice, which I used to watch simply because it was unintentionally ... Read More

Yeah, Okay. It has been said the second coming is not as great as the first. Disagree. Grease 2 Hit a number 1 in my book. It has the characters we have all dreamed of being at one time or another, especially Michael, he wants the girl that doesn't want him, until finally he goes over the top to win her heart and succeeds. The movie doesn't really start out this way until about halfway through and then you figure it out. The hero reveals himself in a way that kind of makes you say "what, that's it?" But you soon realize there was no better way to do it than to just do it. The performances were great, the music was upbeat and followed the story quite well. It takes you into an alternate reality that you somehow wish you could be a part of, but only to an extent. I highly recommend this movie.

Like most Disney movies of its generation, this was a wholesome and fun G-rated movie that my whole family enjoyed seeing. I had great memories of watching this movie when it first came out. I really liked seeing my children (ages 7, 5, and 3) enjoy this movie as much as I did when I was their age. This would be a good addition for parents who are collecting wholesome and clean movies for their young children.

Beautifully photographed in glorious Technicolor, Cover Girl is a pure joy.
