Happily, I did not see this firm when it was first released, and was unaffected by a butchred commercial version. But then, except for STAR WARS, which I saw the day it opened at the Paramount, New York, I make it a point to avoid first release showings on most films. Here, my caution was rewarded and I was able to enjoy a rare experience undiluted and at my leisure. This is, as most reviews see it, a very good, very unusual film; something one expects from Ridley Scott. Myself, I say that's only the beginning, and for more than a month I've been racking my brains to remember when I've seen anything as magnificent and as cinematically successful.

The viewing time? Too long? Not for me. I'm a confirmed Wagnerite, and my motto is "If its good, don't stop."

Where's Cecil Beaton when you need him. When you have the greatest singers of the last half of the 20th century, Nilsson and Corelli, you don't need all this excess! The Met has toned this production down shortly after this broadcast. This production is so busy I hardly even noticed the singing. You'll find every thing you need on the stage but a basket ball court.

I have never seen a better Il Travatore, with exciting singing all round and an emphasis on the role of fate. Pavarotti's duets with Dolora Zajick as the old gypsy are among the most affecting scenes in opera.

For my money this is the finest filmed Turandot available and easily one of, if not the, best singing performances Eva Marton ever committed, in or out of this role. Hal Prince and maestro Maazel are on form in Vienna; a beautifully fluid stasis to the stage design lets the music reign, and Marton and Carerras make the most of it. Marton's singing in the Riddle scene is just hair-raising! Her first "Straniero!..." is like hearing God! I keenly prefer this Turandot to the 1987 Met film. Marton may or may not have by then accessed a greater understanding of the role, but the voice in '87 is inferior to what we find here; singing began to cost increasingly for her by that time. Carerras leaves little for Domingo to improve on. Carerras sings Calaf unforgettably in the recorded version with Caballe and reaches for that here, ... Read More

I will quickly say that this is still my favorite in my opinion the best Tannhauser on DVD. The production is lush and beautiful and the performers act excellently...Levine does a wonderful job conducting as well!

I own the first incarnation of this DVD from Pioneer and agree with the more favorable reviews of the production. Has anyone seen both that older issue and this remastered re-issue? Is there a significant difference/improvement worth investing in? The original suffered from defects of early video technology: for example Levine's baton would leave ghost traces in the air as he waved it. If anyone could comment on whether distractions like that were cleared up it would constitute a helpful review for me.
