I have unfortunately joined the other angry reviewers who have bought this DVD only to find that it does not play on their equipment. I suggest that Amazon post a notice on Sony products warning possible purchasers that there are serious compatibility issues. None of us should be wasting money shipping DVDs to and fro because Sony is dishonest about its products.

The Dreamers is a very unusual movie, telling the story of a pair of French twins, Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green & Louis Garrel), who invite an American student, Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay with them in their Paris apartment. Attracted to them first by a shared interest in the cinema, Matthew is soon drawn into the twins' incestuous relationship. To gain a full appreciation of the movie, including its historical background (set in the 1960's at the time of the student riots in Paris, and related to events in the French film industry at that time), I would recommend watching the excellent special features first. Happily, I did not see this firm when it was first released, and was unaffected by a butchred commercial version. But then, except for STAR WARS, which I saw the day it opened at the Paramount, New York, I make it a point to avoid first release showings on most films. Here, my caution was rewarded and I was able to enjoy a rare experience undiluted and at my leisure. This is, as most reviews see it, a very good, very unusual film; something one expects from Ridley Scott. The Golden Compass was an imaginative and innovative book, inspiring novel viewpoints of personal spirituality, among other things. The plot and events are so complex that compressing it all into a single-sitting movie is ambitious. The elisions that the compression required make the action skip rather than flow. But it would be an entertaining watch, except for one flaw that can't be ignored: the unfortunate casting of the lead child actor. Nothing about her evokes the Lyra of the books. She is too pushy and aggressive. Her acting doesn't feel natural. Her appearance is also too pale and hard. It's not believable that she would inspire the loyalty and warmth and solicitude that the adult characters show in their reactions toward her. The special effects are a consolation, especially the architecture.

I think that this is a great movie for kids! I still believe in teaching children values and this movie does that. It teaches kids the value of friendship and honesty, and being willing to help others. It's got songs that the kids love to sing. Very worthwhile!
