My wife and I like the singing of Edith Piaf. When the DVD of a movie about Ms. Piaf came available, we bought it.

As we watched the performance, we sat in our chairs with our mouth agape. The acting is so superb as to whisk you back to Paris of the '30's with a young woman sining in the streets and dazzling her audiences.

Marion Cotillard won an Academy Award for this part and I know why. She is more than spectacular.

When magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric) suffers a massive stroke, the result is a case of `locked-in syndrome,' which leaves the body paralyzed but the mind unaffected. Through a laborious system of blinking, he defies his condition to communicate not only with those around him, but with the world as well via the writing of his memoir.

Director Julian Schnabel and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski use a full palette of film techniques to bring us into Bauby's world, often presenting scenes from his point of view. In collaboration with Ronald Harwood's sensitive script and the excellent cast, they have made a fascinating, bittersweet film about courage and love.

This film is vintage Polanski: there is little moral certitude, even if you are dealing with Satan, ruthless and evil acolytes, and a con man, expertly acted by Depp. Instead, you find a coherent and frightening journey of discovery and ambiguity. Depp is charged with examining the authenticity of some rare books, which is his profession, though he is also an unscrupulous and sleazy near-thief. As with all great actors, his every gesture exudes his personal confusion, ambition, and cynical humor - a complete personality and even an entire environment.

After witnessing a number of alarming crimes, he single-mindedly pursues his task (for which he is handsomely paid) and blithely ignores the destruction and murderous detritus as if walking though an obstacle course. Along the way, he keeps running ... Read More

The story line is twisted to put it mildly but never boring for a second and interestingly making for great conversation after viewing...

I will not divulge any of the plot (too much has already been spilled in other reviews) and while the plot is amazingly thought out and delivered by Scorsese, the plot really does not matter as much as the characters and their stories.

What matters more in my mind is the characters (all brilliantly acted) who show sides that are deeply engraved in all of us (thankfully in less extreme denominations in most cases). The movie take the obsession, anger, feeling of guilt, revenge, pity, dependence, lust to the extreme but with a bit of soul searching we can relate to the underlying urges and feelings and if we allow it, the movie leaves one thinking afterwards remembering ... This film is one to behold for one terrific performance by Harrison Ford. While vacationing in Paris, Dr. Richard Walker's wife disappears mysteriously while he is taking a shower. Now he must put the pieces of the puzzle together in order to find out what happened to her. You can really sense the frustration, anger and confusion the frightened Harrison Ford must evoke from one scene to the next. Emmanuelle Seigner as the young girl who will help him is gorgeous and something else to behold. Frantic looks and sounds like something Hitchcock would have conjoured up and it's definitely worthy of being in his league. I was glad that the film did not go for the usual happy Hollywood ending. It does work itself out, but there is also a tragedy that comes along with it. Roman Polanski, who married Seigner has brought us another work of art. ... Read More

7.Place Vendome starring: Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Emmanuelle Seigner, Jacques Dutronc, Bernard Fresson

This is a complex and ambiguous film that definitely does not achieve these effects by shadows, dim lighting, and murky dialog. This film glitters! If there were no story, no moral ambiguity, no Catherine Deneuve at the mature height of her powers, no dialog at all...even without these things it would be a visual joyride simply to watch the film and visit the Ritz Hotel, the showrooms and backrooms of the high-end jewelry trade, fashionable Paris interiors, the baroque elegance of Le Train Bleu restaurant (This restaurant has a gorgeous website.), etc.

But my main purpose for this review is to point out a wonderful bit of obscure Cuban music from the artist Hanny. Two pieces from his album "Voice of Cuba" ("Tu Me Quieres Pa Bien" and "Uncastillo A Tu Magia") are used to great effect. (As of now, there are a few used copies of the CD ... Read More

This web page states the DVD has English subtitles. I received my copy and it does not have subtitles, English or any other. The DVD is very good and will be a good purchase if you speak French. I tried it on three different DVD players and they all agree, no subtitles.

I like Nathalie Baye, she is definitely not hollywood pretty nor attractive, but like Audrey Tautou who stars in this film, they are both extremely feminine, unlike Emmanuelle Seigner who seems almost masculine next to them.

It is a French movie and you have to accept the plot is thin and the movement slow, but if you dig the French style, then this movie is worth watching several times.

How can you go wrong with two Harrison Ford DVDs for virtually no money? You can't, that's how. At least, as long as, like me, you could care less about pan and scan or full screen or any of that jazz.

OK, OK, I have to admit that, although the plotting of Presumed Innocent is cracker jack, what's with the music? John Williams really mushed up what was shaping up to be a taut courtroom thriller with a flaccid, trance-inducing score that detracts from the story. Just watch this movie and think how much better it would've been with a more muscular, tension-filled score. Plus, it's got Raul Julia being supercool as the suave defense attorney.

And Frantic: I love it. Harrison Ford is just great in this. I love how he uses the commanding and imperious gestures and arrogant finger-snapping of a internationally respected heart surgeon, ... Read More
