First, I'll get my admitted bias out of the way: Whenever 'Hollywood' gets a hold of something that is hawked as "based on true events", this should be a huge red flag to viewers that they should make it their business to research the alleged "based on true events" in order to separate the Hollywood tendency to engage in both directorial "creative license" and "for the sake of the plot" alterations. Unfortunately, there are folks who see the proverbial 'Silver Screen' [or book [Jon Krakauer] for that matter] version of the alleged "facts" and that's the end of it.

So too, there is in this particular case both in the book and in the subsequent movie to 'romanticize' Chris McCandless and that his eventual death by starvation, yes, I said 'starvation' and not plant poisoning, and his venturing into the wilderness ... Read More

so here i was thinking i had seen every possible movie..or decent or cool movie anyways. when my friend comes home from the navy and we sparked a dark knight conversation. in which i go on to say what an awesome job Ledger had done in it. so he then goes on to tell me "yea, but i really liked his role in Lords Of Dogtown" now i had heard of the whole dogtown skateboarding , surfing trailblazing crew before. but somehow this movie and who all was in it passed me by when it came out. i dont know where i was at the time when i should have been watching and hearing about it. but i had missed it. so he tells me its a definate good flick and a definate good staple DVD to own. So boom im on my favorite website to buy any cd's dvd's and other things...Amazon.com where i was very happy to find it from a decent seller at a decent price. i watched ... Read More

The Girl Next Door is the precursor to the highly successful Superbad. The film has a fomula feel to it. It features the "nerd" trio who seek sex before heading off to ivy league colleges; the madonna/whore good girl gone bad who is the nerd's object of desire; and a backdrop of stereotypes including good looking dumb jocks and oblivious parents.

The film works on a number of levels. The actors all have fine comedic timing, and the plot, while corny, has enough interest and twists to maintain interest. Most importantly, the r factor (drugs, sex and rock n roll) will engage most males 15-19.

A fun film.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker
Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

ALPHA DOG may be an excellent motion picture, a thinly disguised account of the real-life kidnapping and murder of an innocent teenager by a cowardly young drug dealer and his not-too-bright cohorts, but it is also a very disturbing film. Indeed, it elicits the same uncomfortable feelings that I had after viewing the equally fine RIVER'S EDGE (1986), and prompts two questions, "Where is the morality in today's young people?" and "Where are their parents?"

Ben Foster is a drug addict who, like most of the other characters in this film, comes from a fairly well-to-do family. When he can't pay his narcotics tab to drug dealer Emile Hirsch, he declares "war" against the young, conscienceless man. Hirsch retaliates ... Read More

Although there are some holes in the script, I love this movie. The performance by the flat-bellied Kevin Kline, a fastidiously erudite teacher at St. Benedict's boarding school of high repute is a memorable one indeed. I teach at a school resembling this, although not of such an elitist brand.

(Did he always need to wear suspenders, rather than a belt?)

First the drawbacks. The professor of ancient history would be the very last to spot technological gadgetry. But here he does before anyone else. No, one of my great teachers, William Jones of the University of New Hampshire, who taught similar subjects, couldn't even use a laser pointer. So, please. Also, the Romans were a particularly brutal people, inspiring Jesus to rebel against them. They were so, what, crass and brutal that the central idea that teaching character by teaching their history ... Read More
