It would be difficult to overestimate the impact TOMMY had when hit movie screens in 1975, and if you were alive at the time you knew of the movie, knew of the stars, and very likely heard some of the music--whether you wanted to or not. It was ubiquitious; it was inevitable; it was also very exciting. But time, as one rock and roller once noted, was waiting in the wings. Seen today, TOMMY is less of a success than we thought it was at the time, a mixed bag of music, singers, and imagery, some of it very successful and some of it not.

The story is extremely, extremely loose, so much so that it pretty much fails to come to any meaningful conclusion. Generally, it concerns an English woman, Nora (Ann-Margaret) whose husband is killed in World War II. She thereafter has a son by ... Read More

"Elton John: Tantrums and Tiaras"

Elton Superstar

Amos Lassen

Love him or hate him, there is no denying that Elton John is a superstar. He is larger than life but even with that, we know little about his personal life." Tantrums and Tiaras" gives us a different Elton John and we get to see some of his personal moments. He is a complex person in his private life as he is as a composer and performer. This film was made by his partner, David Furnish and it takes us on a personal tour of the artist named Elton as he is on the road and at home, with his family, with is partner and with his band. We get to see his sensitive side alongside his moody side. The one thing that stands out in this documentary is how much money Elton John spends and wastes. However, this does ... Read More

This DVD is simply great, if you are even slightly interested in John Lennon.
It contains so much "behind the scenes" footage, that I was very surprised that he was as accessible as he appears in this documentary.
One scene shows a lost young man, who trespasses on Lennon's property in London. Mr. Lennon was kind and empathetic enough to go out and talk with the fan, and then subsequently invite him in to eat at their table.
It's kind of freaky, in a way that might portend his final chapter.
I was never overly impressed with Lennon's singing voice, and I can deal with the politics, since he seemed genuine in his efforts. What I always admired about Mr. Lennon and the older version of the Beatles, is that he could really JAM. This DVD intertwines so much of his best music (and much Beatles ... Read More

8.Red Piano-Deluxe starring: Elton John

This four disc box set is one of Elton John's most expansive. The first DVD is the actual concert at Caesar's Palace with fourteen songs played to perfection in front of a 4,100 seat crowd. Its Elton's famous band members combined with a theatrical show combining visual delights like neon sculptures, pop art inflatable's, pole-dancing Pamela Anderson, giant love hearts, balloons and more. Filmmaker David LaChapelle has included original videos for the backdrop for each individual song. There is constant music and constant motion awash in color. The show is much more intimate than the Madison Square Garden 60th Birthday party concert. Elton does a lot more personal talking in this great video as well. The show is available in Dolby stereo or DTS surround.

The first DVD includes the songs:

I think this film pays the price of being the third in a sequel and the existance of the two easier-to-watch predecessors.
I think the music in this one is wonderful, the images are not as beautiful as the natural ones of Koia but equally strong - almost hypnotic at times. The logical thread is difficult to follow and it either needs repeted viewings or some external help. I couldn't get it.
What in my opinion spoiled it a bit are the recurrent similiarities with the previous movies (the approach is the same: music+imagery, the music is often veeeeery similar to Koia, some scenes of autos lights are a copy from Koia, etc...) which keep tempting an uncaptured viewer into thinking that this third release was merely a money-making exercise trying to capitalise on past successes.
I too like other reviewers was ... Read More

The video quality is fuzzy and out of focus, -but it's a great compilation of his best songs done well, if only it were 'watchable', too. Disappointing.
