Took this movie out as I liked Dances With Wolves. Just terrible, bad plot, bad acting, bad ending.

The movie is GREAT, the way it was shot, the camera work, the exceptional action, the story-lines, everything! The masterful story developing when it goes through waves to culmination is mesmerizing. I can't speak about this work otherwise as in superlative terms and it is why it had 10 academy nominations. The story is incredibly deep, the dialogs are unbelievably smart and trough to life. In every shot, angle, camera movement, music there is so much of cool, artistic interpretation and sophistication. My humble description can even remotely capture the splendor of this work.

Me and a friend had been wanting to see this movie one for the content but also for its art prospective. I can't speak for my friend, but it was not what I expected at all. It is 4 hrs long (on the 2 disc special edition) and none of it is really any good. The movie bring up some points, that are great but other wise I would say this movie is not worth buying. Rent the movie before you consider buying. I wish I had. Kev

I give this 5 stars not just for being a masterpiece of a story but also as a wonderful trip to Florence (and the english countryside). Julian Sands and Helena Bonham Carter fans will also be pleased.

Tried to care about this elegant, opulent saga, but this movie just comes off as rather pointless. Michelle Pfeiffer turns in a radiant performance trying to get out from under these overstuffed rooms and overwrought sensibilities, but can't quite manage it. Her main problem, in my opinion, Daniel Day-Lewis here plainly just doesn't cut it as a leading man. His emasculated, simpering deadpan, dispensing dialogue medicinally as so much cough syrup, completely fails to engage as a romantic figure. Trying to imagine Michelle's ravishing, vivacious character head over heels for him is more than a stretch. I've seen gunfighters with more chemistry than these two. Their first intimate scene, eek! Comes off like an accident on a crowded bus. This mis-casting is quite annoying, as this movie appears in many ways to have had real promise. ... Read More
