The musical is not my genre of choice. I prefer classic film-noirs which are about as diametrically opposed to musicals as a genre can be. That said I enjoyed The Sound of Music immensely. The songs were very moving and fit the storyline perfectly. Speaking of the story, unlike the case in a lot of musicals, the plot in The Sound of Music does not exist simply to move the film from one musical number to another. It is a truly memorable romance story that will stay with viewer long after the viewing experience. The entire cast is superb (the kids are adorable!). This was Julie Andrew's coup de grace. It deserves all the accolades (including multiple Oscars) it has received. Strongly recommended!

I viewed Somewhere In Time on the television. I enjoyed the mystery of it and also the time period. I determined to start a library of movies I enjoyed so I could randomly relax and forget everything. I have done so and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of Somewhere In Time. Touching love story mixed with exciting conflict. Join me, won't you?

This is by far the best film to come out of a very experimental decade. Instead, this is a classic of traditional film-making, by a master of Hollywood drama. It is with films like this that one wants to say, "they don't make 'em like this anymore." Although the acting is, indeed, flawless and exhilarating as others have noted, it is finally the totality of the film that is so outstanding. The story, of course, is brilliantly conceived by Kipling, filled with irony and pathos, a superb celebration and denunciation of Empire and its central conceit. No doubt, Huston had this one tucked in his back pocket for years. As with other Huston films, this is a story about men, their friendships, their betrayals. The story reminds me of Huston's earlier film "The Misfits, " starring Clarke Gable and Monte Clift. ... Read More

I loved this movie very much, it was a little bit long, but keep in mind to tell a great story like this one you must keep a open mind and sit down and listen.

WARNING SOME SPOLIERS ARE PRESENT

It starts out with the aged Ptolemy I Soter (Anthony Hopkins), a general, childhood friend of Alexander (Colin Farrell) and ancester of the great Cleopatra. He tells the story of Alexander as he remembers it.

He begins to say that Alexander's mother Olympias (Angelina Jolie)was at the wrath of her abusive, drunk cyclopitic husband King Philip ll (Val Kilmer) of Macadonia. She claimed to have been with the god Dionisis and had Alexander with him. I probably would have claimed it too if I was married to a jerk like Philip. She also played with snakes, which I didn't mind because ... Read More

At times when the epic was often "mere spectacle," this is an attempt of taking history seriously, dissecting the real causes of the decline of the greatest empire in the ancient world. Thouh only semi-historical, with fictional elements and characters, it makes a point, that the fall of a great empire is a result of many causes, but essentially it is a decay from within that brings it about. Rome had five great emperors in succession, from Hadrian to Marcus Aurelius, in a span of two centiries, but subseuently fell into the hands of icompetent egomaniacs whose concept of Rome was based on central power and exploitation, rather than sharing its wealth and privileges with other peoples.
Though slow-paced and lacking in excitement and the dramatic action of some of its predecessors (Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia), this majestic film ... Read More
