This is one of my favorite period stories and the acting/actors did a superb job of bringing the characters to life in this adaptation of the classic novel. If you love this type of period story as much as I do, you will not be disappointed with this film. The plot is twisty and dramatic and the ending is grand. It is one of my all time favorites.

Thanks to this movie and her books, I had the privilege of working in her Milwaukee and Chicago schools, being trained directly by her in early 1999-2000. She's the real deal, and it's sad that her school has closed, but the legend will live on if educators start adopting her methodology. Thanks Marva.

It was a good movie, Hallmark, and all. Kept thinking it could have been better.

This cheap rip-off comedy was a popular staple on CInemax or Showtime when it came out. It is filled with some notable comics like Charles Grodin, Gerrit Graham (Used Cars), Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, Meagan Mulally (when she was about 20 and slim) and Mario Van Peebles. The talent pool can't balance out the bad writing, a joke or two will hit but as a whole picture, it's void of great laughs. It's interesting to see how producer Roger Corman hurried this one out. The main location is a tropical island resort and Corman seems to have had built a set consisting of small shacks and canopies somewhere near Malibu instead of actually taking cast and crew to the Caribbean. Malibu Express is one of those "late night cable" movies from the 80's we watched as teenagers on HBO or Showtime and thankfully it survived to make it onto DVD! A funny and strangely entertaining flick with plenty of gratuitous nudity (what would a movie be without a nude shower scene at least?) This is a great story -- beautifully written and well acted, but so poorly engineered that it is almost impossible to enjoy. I recently had the opportunity to speak with the screenwriters, and even THEY agree that it's just about the worst engineering job in the history of the world! The guy who released it should be taken out and shot. Unfortunately, he'll probably never read this, because if he cared at all about his film, he would never have allowed it to be released this way. Too bad, as it is some of the best work that Zen Gesner and Jeanetta Arnette (who you might remember from "Boys Don't Cry") have ever done, and it definitely deserves to be seen.
