I agree with the review about correct aspect ratios. Panavision, CinemaScope and similar anamorphic processes are wider but not as sharp as 70mm which has an aspect ratio of 2:20 to 1. Ultra Panavision, another 70mm process had an aspect ratio of 2:76 to 1. Both processes were later used as the "new" single lens Cinerama films which were made after How the West Was Won which was done in the original 3-strip 35mm process. Mike Todd, who was one of the original members of the Cinerama corporation sold his interest in the company to form his own company which ultimately developed the Todd-AO 70mm process which came close to duplicating the viseral effect of Cinerama. Super Panavision was developed later to compete with Todd-AO using similar lens technology. But as most of us film buffs know...most ... Read More

I can't say much about this DVD because, to me, it is perfect. Mr. Perlman plays these giant violin concertos with vigor, passion, and great expertise. His finger work is incredible. Mr. Barenboim conducts the orchestra with sensitivity and grace. The sound is excellent. Just buy it and see for yourself.

My title applies primarily to the 1965 black & white film of Alexis Weissenberg playing Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka, amazingly creatively filmed in Stockholm by Åke Falck. I remember seeing this film on TV almost forty years ago and the memory of it has stayed with me ever since. I am so pleased finally to have a copy of that marvelous film. Weissenberg was in his early thirties at the time and at the very height of his considerable form. The views provided by Falck are highly unusual but each has a clear intention of adding to our enjoyment of the music by showing us in closeup both the hands of Weissenberg and the movements of the mechanism of the piano; the camera actually almost climbs inside the piano. The whole thing is filmed with high-key contrast. This is one of the great ... Read More

Dracula A.D. 1972 is a campy instalment in the Dracula series made by Hammer Films. The gist of the movie is that Dracula gets resurrected in 1972 by a young acolyte, Johnny Alucard and seeks to destroy the remaining Van Helsings, i.e. Dr Van Helsing [Peter Cushing] and his beautiful, hippie granddaughter Jessica [Stephanie Beacham].

Though Christopher Lee reprises his role as the malevolent count, his screen time is quite limited and I felt too much screen time was wasted on portraying the debauchery and free-swinging lifestyle of 70s Hippie culture - drugs, sex and rock n roll. But, when he does appear, Lee is magnetic as the count and doesn't disappoint in his performance.

But the best performance in this movie is Peter Cushing's 20th century Van Helsing - he is assured, intelligent ... Read More

I'd liked to say that I agree with Nabih Bulos' comments on this excellent release. I found the sound and the video quality to be both quite good (although it's all, of course, in mono sound and black and white). This is taking into consideration the source of almost all of the material, which is from the Soviet Union of the late 1920s (!) till the mid to late 1960s. I was amazed at the good quality of the oldest material, showing us a young and trim Oistrakh playing brilliantly. The three great concertos on this disc are all very well performed by both soloist and orchestra. The Sibelius receives a passionate reading, as does the Brahms and Tchiakovsky. A nice little extra is a very brief moment showing Shostakovich in the appreciative audience of the Tchiakovsky. The only caviet is a quibble since it's about the very short extra ... Read More

There's something magical about this concert. The setting is in Athens in May, 2004, during the summer Oympics, and was played by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Simon Rattle with pianist Daniel Barenboim in the Herodes Atticus Odeon, a Roman theater from 161 AD situated on the southern slope of the Acropolis. The camera pans across the Parthenon several times, and I really get a thrill every time it comes into view. The combination of great music and Greek glory is irresistible, and add excellent picture coupled with superb sound quality, and it adds up to a very special music DVD.

The D minor Piano Concerto of Brahms fits in very well with the Hellenistic background, since it's made of both tragic and heroic material, and it gets a good standard reading by Barenboim, and the orchestra sounds glorious in the major ... Read More
