No Reservations if one of those classic type movies that I can watch multiple times and never tire of it. Great movie. There should be more like it.

I can't improve on the first sentence from W.Corse's excellent 2/3/05 review:

"Absence of Malice is one of my all-time favorites, and the first "older" movie that I grabbed when it was finally released on DVD. In my opinion this is one film that should be required viewing for every journalism major in the USA. "

Some of other reviewers' comments make my eyes cross.
(1) The movie is "slow"? (Not if you're paying attention to Paul Newman's brick-by-brick implementation of an utterly brilliant revenge.)
(2) Sally Fields doesn't look too good? (I think she looks better in this film than she's ever looked.)
(3) The "attraction" between Newman/Field is silly/implausible/the film's weak spot? (I disagree. The scenes with these two are some of the best written/best ... Read More

One thing it might mean is that this is one of the most unique science fiction films ever made. I recently watched it with my wife (who very rarely enjoys any kind of sci-fi), a friend, and that friend's wife (who simply detests all sci-fi). Yet everyone enjoyed it. (My friend and I had already seen it.)

"This means something," is a recurring line throughout CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, similar to "I've got a bad feeling about this," in the STAR WARS films. So, the dialogue is not the best ever written. But CE3K contains a human element interwoven throughout both the character development as well as the plot development that you're unlikely to find any other science fiction film, and certain not to find in any other UFO film.

Often great movies get cloned and copied, and fans ... Read More

Great movie which basically does for community theater what Spinal Tap did to rock and roll.

Not quite as well done as Best in Show or a Mighty Wind, but still a classic.

Robert Altman decided to leave his usual Americana behind with the dreary British period piece "Gosford Park." It's 1932; the British aristocracy is in its twilight and war looms on the Continent. At Gosford Park, however,it's all fun and games until someone ends up dead. Think of this movie as the dull "Clue" made a little more brilliantly.

"Gosford Park" has the usual upstairs/downstairs drama. The great Bob Balaban stars as a visiting Hollywood producer. The hosting aristocrats are Michael Gambon and Kristin Scott Thomas. Jeremy Northam and Maggie Smith are part of the upper crust. Numbered among the servants and valets are the late Alan Bates, Clive Owen, Derek Jacobi, and Ryan Philippe. Helen Mirren herself is in charge of the servants. Talented actors, beautiful production design, elegant costumes, period music- ... Read More

I thought this movie was fun mainly because I love all Christopher Guest movies, they are always full of subtle satire and the actors all act so natural as though they are just adlibbing most of it. The mighty wind was just another typical Guest satire on the folk music industry with all of its nerdiest and silly type casts the Guest loves to exploit and have fun with. Alot of fun and worth watching over in case you missed something the first time.

*** spoilers ***
Joe Buck is a guy who has a little too much confidence in his sexual prowess. He decided in his optimism to make a run to New York to become a hustler for rich women. He quickly becomes a victim to a seedy man by the name of Rico. and in a circumstantial set of events run into each other and becomes roommates.

In and of themselves, the actions of these two towards everyone they meet is despicable, but fits well with how the people treat each other in general in the city. Joe gets a rude awakening when he sees a man passed out in the middle of the sidewalk and no one interested in helping the man out. Joe and Rico steal money, addresses, try to take advantage of the lonely, but as their relationship progresses ... Read More

Catch-22 DVD

Catch-22 is based on Joseph Heller's novel about an American air base in the Mediterranean during World War II. Again, if you are a reader IMHO the book Joseph Heller's Catch-22 (Barron's Book Notes) is better, the movie quicker, Starring Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam.

Recommended for fans of Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam.

M Night lost my respect with "The Happening", and I hope it's temporary, as I prefer films with weight. His films, conceptually, always seem to want to convey a deeper message, meaning or metaphor. This is welcomed for me, but this film, Lady in the Water was a mess. The characters seemed to be created like caricatures, and for me, could not be taken seriously. The film felt 10 hrs long, and the entire film was a garbled mess for me. PQ and AQ clear, but not the best. Technically-4/5. Film 1/5. Ugh.
