When the subject of best westerns ever made is mentioned, Conagher never gets any recognition. Maybe the reason is it never made the big screen. But not so long ago during the good ol' 90's the TNT network produced some of the best television features in the history of prime time from biblical epics to shows based on Louis Lamour like this one. One thing these features had in common were high production values, good direction and some of the finest ensembles of actors found in television. Conagher in particular gets my attention because the story is outstanding. You get gritty hard edged western action from Sam Elliott who is one of the most authentic western actors you'll ever see. You even have a fine romance with the frontier woman played by Katherine Ross (the tumbleweeds). I don't know ... Read More

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (Adam Marcus, 1993)

It pains me to admit that I didn't realize until about ten minutes into watching this piece of dreck that I'd already seen it. It's downright embarrassing to admit that after I realized this, I did, in fact, watch the remainder of the movie again. Why would I put myself through such horror again? Your guess is as good as mine. But I did. And since I did, I might as well review it. I can sum my review up in three words: "Oh, the humanity." But since three-word reviews are not looked upon kindly by those in the movie-buying community, I will take a few minutes to expand on my reaction.

Plot: after an FBI sting, Jason (Kane Hodder) is finally taken down. Or is he? When he gets to the morgue (in pieces, of course), ... Read More

Jack Nicholson plays a concert pianist who works on oil rigs and has a beautifully singing girlfriend who is employed as a waitress. Both lead drifting, not too happy lives. Karen Black, his girlfriend, puts up with mistreatment and infidelity while Jack constantly mistreats her and longs for someone else. She even gets left in a motel room for two days while he visits his family! A good story of a man with talent who can't seem to get it together and take himself in a direction which would make his life meaningful. A visit to a father who is dying is in order but the son is lost and making more mistakes along the way. His cruelty alarms people and he doesn't seem to know where it is coming from. A very good character study without obvious answers.

A bio-pic that Steve McQueen owned from the moment he steps on screen. Mixed with fact and fiction it tells a story of a complicated man who has outlived his times. He is a hero with no war and warrior without an army. His life is as fluid as he is set in stone. Yet, McQueen makes you feel for this questionable knight of the old west. What acting! A must for any collector.

CRITTERS is my favorite movie of it's type. I like it even more than GREMLINS (which I love), and far more than any of the other "puppet-monster" movies that came out (Ghoulies, Hobgoblins, etc.). CRITTERS takes us to the tiny town of Grovers Mill, Kansas, the site of an alien invasion. It seems that a renegade bunch of crites ( little, furry, carnivorous space monsters) have escaped from intergalactic prison, and headed straight toward earth for a snack (us)! This leads to a night of horror and hilarity, when the rolly creatures arrive and begin eating any / all flesh in sight! Two extraterrestrial bounty hunters are dispatched to hunt down and destroy the crites before they can fully satisfy their insatiable appetites. The bounty hunters are hilarious, as they can make themselves look like anyone they encounter, ... Read More

Sissy Spacek received her fourth Oscar nomination for her role in 1984's "The River." She plays a farm wife, struggling to keep her family intact while her husband (Mel Gibson) tries to save their farm. The farm abuts a small river, which seems to flood every time it rains. The flooding ruins their crops and puts the family at constant peril of bankruptcy. Add to this mixture Scott Glenn, who plays a scheming developer; he wants to buy up all the land and have the government build a dam to flood the valley. Gibson and Spacek refuse to sell their land, and Gibson even takes work at a local mill to stave off creditors. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to Gibson, he is replacing striking workers and gets branded a scab.

"The River" tackles a very worth topic - the farming crisis of the 1980s, when many small farmers ... Read More

I had seen parts of this before, but watched the whole thing through today. I must say, as great as parts of this film are, it nevertheless disappoints on many crucial levels. The acting, (while largely cheesy) is enjoyable in a pic like this. I do enjoy Robert Blake's performance though, even though Detective Harvey is WAAAY over the top!! (the coroner guy was very good also). I definitely see a link to "Easy Rider", and indeed, both films represent a (then) new wave of modern western, even maybe similar in some ways to Peckinpah's "Wild Bunch" and "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia". Actually, as powerful a film as Easy Rider is, I don't think it's a very good film either. But like Elecra Glide, it does invoke that new "take to the highway" consciousness of the counterculture of the early 70's. And as in Easy Rider, the ... Read More

This is not a movie that will ever win any great awards, but I like it. It's very entertaining, and it has some amusing characters. I think that with a bigger budget and a little more plot, they could have really made this a pretty good movie.
