This is a great movie, one of my all time favorites. It has a great cast and wonderful music.

Just as a note--my review comes shortly after the death of Paul Newman, and in a sense this is my way to pay tribute to one of the greatest actors of all time. He will be sorely missed. Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman) was once a great pool shark, but that was 25 years ago. Now he's selling liquor, ironically in pool halls, until he stumbles onto Vince (Tom Cruise), an arrogant, young pool hustler. Felson tries to be his mentor, show him the ropes and teach him a thing or two about what it means to be the best. The desire to play was too much for Felson so he pulls a quick one on Vince, and in a turn of events, competes against him in the nine ball championships. This movie is a really powerful demonstration of the "art" of movie making as it is hard to find today. Pure content, no special effects, a simple setting - yet extremely exciting, makes you wanna continue watching until the last minute. A true classic!

This is the hidden gem of the Coens' ouevre - arguably on a par with Lebowski. Tight, witty, darkly humorous dialogue and outstanding performances by Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, and especially Jennifer Jason Leigh - with smaller, yet essential, roles by Charles Durning and Bruce Campbell. Even a peek of Steve Buscemi. Great score, fabulous art direction, and writing credits shared by the Coens and Sam Raimi. Buy it, and watch repeatedly.

This was a really poorly-made movie. We appreciate the fact that we only borrowed it from the library and didn't spend money on it. We are also happy that we don't have to hide it from younger viewers. Maybe it is just that we have sophisticated taste. First of all, the movie was just poorly directed, as the story line was gentle and probably could have passed as a good film. Some of the actors had potential, but the lines were weak, and in many cases, very random to the scenes. The lighting was also very poor. Often, the focus was poor as well, and many times it was hard to define the objects or people in the scene, or what was happening in the scene. In certain situations, the words being said seemed to have been duped in, and would come after the character had turned their back on the camera. Some examples ... Read More

A golden retriever that can not only play basketball by shooting with his nose, but can later on play football, baseball, soccer, and volleyball. Realistic? No, not at all. A good family film? Yes. When I was younger I loved watching Air Bud, especially the first one right here. This film is about a young boy who lost his father to an accident that needs a friend. Then a dog shows up. Soon he discovers that he can play basketball! And so the movie continues! This is a great family film to watch. I still do enjoy watching some of the Air Buds. One thing is for sure. If you watch one Air Bud, you gotta watch them all! If you've seen another Air Bud or are just looking for a good family film, this is definately for you!!!
