The comfortable lives of Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche), an upper-class French couple, are disrupted by the appearance of mysterious videotapes which show that their home is under surveillance. This becomes the trigger for Georges's guilty flashbacks concerning a boy who lived with his family when he was growing up, with tremendous consequences for his married life.

Director/screenwriter Michael Haneke's film frustrates many viewers with its inconclusive narrative. I was fascinated by the theme of guilt: how it can bubble just under the surface of our lives, its destructive power, and the influence it can have on others, including the next generation. I have come up with an explanation for events that satisfies me, and other viewers are invited to put ... Read More

This film is in French and has english subtitles so beware....

I loved this film as it ties the families story together quite well. You don't get much background just a good starting point for the begining of the main action.

Each member of the family has a brief plot point in the film, each deals with personal as well as family issues.

Unlike alot of movies that try this type of mulitple plot story line "Times have been Better" ties the story together well and leaves you at a conclusion that is well rounded and leaves a mystery.(just a little)

Claude Sautet is best known for his highly-acclaimed films Un Coeur en Hiver ( A Heart in Winter ) and Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud. Sautet's earlier, 1972 French romance, César et Rosalie, stars Yves Montand and Romy Schneider as a May-December couple who unexpectedly find themselves in a love triangle involving Cesar (Montand), Rosalie (Schneider), and Rosalie's former lover, David (Sami Frey), an artist who is determined to win her back. David evokes jealous feeings in César, threatening his otherwise happy relationship with Rosalie. Ultimately, Rosalie is forced to choose between the two men.

The plot of César & Rosalie is far from predictable. In fact, one of the things I enjoy most about French films such as this one is that, unlike Americans, the French seem so much more grownup ... Read More

I have genuine espect for the collective amazon.com reviewers. But this time, I was misled and I write because I don't want you to be.

Catherine Deneuve is not 'approaching 60' in this movie; she is over 63. That's the least of what is wrong here as I would love, as one who is her age to see some realism about women in their sixties, born in the early 40's. 1943 to be precise.

This is one of the last three Deneuve movies, and I've seen them all, where she is what's wrong, rather than what is right with the film.

She is overweight yet always moves as if highly unconfortable about it. She had a horrid face lift, can't imagine why, and her lips curl into a snarl that is when you are allowed to see her face, a face I have always loved. In "Nearest to Heaven" she is most often ... Read More

...full stop.

"La Ceremonie" was arguably too Nietzschean and morbid for its own sake. Its portrayal of class arguably too obvious and reductive.

In "The Bridesmaid," Chabrol delves into familiar French terrain -- the amour fou -- and genuinely gives it new life. The film is utterly masterful in its understated use of the medium, absolutely ingenious in the way it burrows into one's subconscious.

With the thematic use of the bust of Flora, the film tips its cap to Truffaut's "Jules and Jim," and in more ways than one. Henri-Pierre Roché penned his tale of romantic obsession in his seventies. Chabrol, now himself in his seventies, has given us his own febrile, darkly humorous story of love gone mad, with an Oedipal twist.

In terms of mastery of style and sophistication ... Read More

DVD : Van Gogh
This should not be viewed as a 'biography'. It is a ficticious movie that presents Vincent as a lady's man.

It is made even worse as a 'life of the artist' because all the actors are very convincing and resemble their namesakes. A viewer who does not know more than the usual 'van Gogh was crazy and he cut off his ear' will unfortunately take this account as truth. But even they will be confused, as I was, because at this period in his life, Vincent's ear would have been disfigured.

It would have been a better idea to present this as a French Impressionist who lived at the same time, but with a different name. The period scenes, rooms and railcars are nice.

Nice touches are when Theo's wife is bathing, she resembles a Degas bather.
In the deleted scenes, there's a funny one of Vincent observing ... Read More

We are the eyes of the camera, moving from the dark shadows of trees, across a gravel driveway, through the entrance of a large house, past an open door where a maid is setting out dishes on a table, up the stairs and past a room where a young woman is sitting on the floor, clasping her knees, down the hallway and into a bedroom, then past the corpse on the floor to focus on his hand grasping the coverlet. All the while we hear a cheap, romantic song coming from a radio somewhere in the house...

A memory
comes to you in your dreams
but it is not what it seems
and haunts you for eternity.

A memory
makes you believe he has never gone
that there's no need to grieve
and that the past lives on.

The Flower of Evil (La Fleur du Mal) is an almost elegiac Claude Chabrol movie ... Read More

9.The School of Flesh starring: Isabelle Huppert, Vincent Martinez, Vincent Lindon, Marthe Keller, François Berléand
directed by: Benoît Jacquot
December 07, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

DVD : The School of Flesh
Isabelle Huppert is like one of those stars whose luminence never dims. She dominates every scene she steps into. And those characters she plays. Always strong women, who beneath their steely exteriors hide a million wounds. You never know where you will end up with her. In confusion. In a rage. In tears.

The School of Flesh is no exception. It is all Huppert's feast with some tasty side-dishes as well. In it, she plays a confident and self-possessed doyen of the fashion industry, Dominque, who childless and partnerless, longs for somebody to love. While out with her girlfriend, they end up in a gay bar where Dominique's eyes rest upon the sexy bartender, Quentin(Vincent Martinez). Her gaze is surprisingly returned. In fact, the hunted soon turns on the hunter. Encouraged, Dominque, like a moth to the flame, returns to the source of her desire. ... Read More

10.Capitaine Conan starring: Philippe Torreton, Samuel Le Bihan, Bernard Le Coq, Catherine Rich, François Berléand

December 19, 2000
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

DVD : Capitaine Conan
Bertrand Tavernier's 1997 film on the tensions of war in a time of 'peace.' Set primarily in Bulgaria and the Balkans, the film explores the psyche of the elite soldiers and commandos who fought in the Great War and how the coming of the peace took a toll on the hardended souls of such men.

Capitaine Conan (Phillipe Torreton) is an elite commando whose nihilitic views on life don't agree with peace but who understands how his men want to go home. He doesn't really have a high opinion of regular officers and his claim is that only 3000 crack troops like himself won The Great War. His unit is kept active in the Balkans doing various details such as peacekeeping and fighting Bolsheviks. The men are restless however and feel neither comfortable with the tought of peace or in remaining on active duty. Unlike his friend (Samuel le Bihain)who believes in fair ... Read More
