I am a big fan of both Grace Kelly and Alfred Hitchcock, but I really think this film is ridiculous. We are made to believe that somehow this photographer (Stewart) is holed up in his shoddy back-alley apartment due to an injury, but his gorgeous socialite girlfriend (Kelly) is not at all averse to hanging out there constantly. She looks as out of place as a Tiffany lamp in a public restroom. There is also a ridiculous attempt at sexualizing Kelly, involving her showing Stewart a piece of not-so-revealing lingerie (not even wearing, just showing) as "a taste of things to come." Grace Kelly is just not right here, mainly because she seems simultaneously less uptight and more classy than her character.

I wish I could critique the writing, but since this is a suspense film it would ... Read More

THE VIKING is docu-fiction very much in the tradition of NANOOK OF THE NORTH (1922). "The Viking" is the name of the Newfoundland-coast sealing boat where the action unfolds. Highlight of this movie is the natural wonder of sea, ice and action, and not the contrived love story.

MAN OF ARAN is another example of docu/fiction from the creator of "Nanook," Robert Flaherty. This one concerns residents of remote islands off Ireland's western coast and their battle for survival against a violent sea and harsh climate.

Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 viewer poll rating found at a film resource website.

(6.9) The Viking (Canada/USA-1931) - Charles Starrett/Arthur Vinton/Bob Bartlett/Louise Huntington

4.My Love for Yours starring: Astrid Allwyn, Hooper Atchley, John Bagni, Bennie Bartlett, Helen Broderick

DVD : My Love for Yours
This very warm and charming film is very special but not well known. Madeleine Carroll gives one of her best performances opposite Fred MacMurray, who also shines in this quietly affecting comedy-drama. A good screenplay from Virgina Van Upp based on stories by Grace Sartwell Mason and Katharine Brust, and some nice photography from Ted Tetzlaff, make this film very satisfying.

Edward H. Griffith directed this film which is surprisingly good, sneaking up on the viewer until you are fully engrossed in a story which has a very real and mature feel to it. Edith Head dressed the elegant Madeleine Carroll, and she was never lovelier than in "Honeymoon in Bali," also known as "My Love For Yours."

Gail Allen (Madeleine Carroll) runs Morrissey's, an upscale department store. She ... Read More
