More than an epic tale of an early 20th Century oilman, this is a fascinating study of the greed for power and what it does to a man.
We meet Daniel Plainview down the bottom of a mine, exerting himself in mind-numbingly monotonous and backbreaking work, looking for gold or silver. He is a man willing to endure pain and humiliation to grasp more money, or more power. As he quickly moves from gold to black gold, he becomes more powerful, and his ruthlessness and underhandedness become more and more apparent, combined with the charisma required to persuade landowners to part with the mineral rights of their property. We learn about how he sees other people when he adopts a boy who he finds useful to put a kind face on his activities, and how he treats a man appears claiming to be his ... Read More

I always thought that this was a very funny movie. It makes fun of historical events. Leslie Edwards and Bartholomew Hunt and others try to beat Lewis and Clark to the Pacific. A lot of hilarious things happen, like Chris Farley trying to get the egg of an Eagle for his friend, before he dies. Chris gets hungry and cooks the egg, then he has to go up the tree again. This was Chris Farley's last movie, and it is one of his best movies! If you love comedy, and Chris Farley, you'll love ALMOST HEROES!!!

Back in 1982, a desert-dwelling cult leader was murdered by a group of ex-cult members. Now (1995), said cult leader, known as "Nix" and "The Puritan", is set for his return in a foretold resurrection. Enter a private detective named Harry D'Amour (Scott Bakula), who finds himself right in the middle of a battle between the remaining Nix faithful, and a magician named Swann (Kevin J. O'Conner from The Mummy). D'Amour gets involved w/ Swann's breath-takingly beautiful wife (Famke Janssen) and winds up solving a mystery that he never bargained for. Packed w/ colorful, interesting characters and wild situations, LORD OF ILLUSIONS is a supremely satisfying supernatural spooker. Clive Barker always seems to have something new and dreadful up his dank sleeve. If you enjoyed HELLRAISER, NIGHTBREED, or CANDYMAN, then this little slice ... Read More

I saw this movie soundly trashed at another web site, but since I write reviews at amazon.com, I guess I'll pass on getting into a debate at the other site. I liked this movie quite a bit, and I am astounded that people dislike it so much. I've been a fan of Ms. Miller's for many years, and I passed it in the video store the other day, and that's why I rented it, because I remembered that she was in it. So I guess I was a little prejudiced, but I've seen some of her movies I wouldn't recommend to anyone, for sure.

This movie is quite decent, above average in my opinion. I suppose you could say that the story about the playboy womanizer who reforms is unoriginal, but the fact is, the way he is reformed, the transformation he goes through, having to accept that his deceased mother's lover is a woman he once loved, accepting her for ... This is a good film and and I would like it except for two things: The title and the fact there was nothing to feel good about in watching this film--it was depressing. It is a not-so-subtle attack on middle class American values and institutions. Targets are the American Military, Marriage, gun ownership, corporate America/capitalism, consumerism, traditional morals and sexual mores etc....The only thing the writers left out was religion--none of the cast of dysfunctional people were church going christians. I am sure this was a oversight. The title was off putting because it suggests that Americans have empty, dysfunctional, meaningless lives. This film is a left-wing diatribe with a social agenda to bash american society using many liberal cliches and unlikable, one-dimensional characters. Maybe I read too much into it.

My friend and I saw a preview for this movie with Boondock Saints. We both loved Boondock Saints so much that we decided to rent If . . . Dog . . . Rabbit . . . after seeing the preview 30 times. I swear I could feel my IQ drop at least two dozen points throughout the movie, and little did I know my friend felt the same, but we both sat through it for the other's sake. So yes, I have seen the movie all the way through and it is equally sucky all the way through. Afterward, while discussing this movie, my friend and I decided that we hated it so much that he took it out into the backyard, put it on a stump, and shot it. Honest to god. This movie was beyond bad. I enjoy Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and this movie was so bad that if I owned a gun I would have shot it a couple times myself. Save yourself $.35 and 2 hours and just jam sharpened carrots ... Read More
