DVD : Gone with the Wind (Four-Disc Collector's Edition) 1939
This is the 716th review of this movie! What can I say that has not already been said about this wonderfully compelling movie? I will not comment on the restoration process or the pros and cons of buying the 2-disk or 4-disk set, as this is adequately discussed by many other reviewers. I will say that this movie won 10 Academy awards and is still regarded as the 6th best epic movie of all-time. That should be credentials enough to want to view this extraordinary movie.

Watching this movie is an absolutely delightful experience, and I can just imagine attending the movie in the theatre for the first time! I can just imagine the excitement and the buzz of conversation during the intermission, for the first half of this movie is quite unlike any other movie up to that date ... Read More

I watched this movie with my 17 year old daughter. We both found it very touching and relevant even though it is dated. Irene Dunne is wonderful as the Mama.

This was one of Audrey's finest performance. She was moving, believable and heart touching. She is the finest actress to ever hit the big screen.

The mom (Barbara Stanwyck) is a tacky, tastless woman, but loves her little daughter so very much that she makes what I consider to be the ultimate sacrafice. I won't ruin the end for you by saying what she does, but it is one of my favorite old movies.

Don't bother with the re-make, which I believe was done in the 90's sometime. It's a terrible dissapointment.

This isn't a great film. Part of the problem lies with the character assigned to Gene Tierney. The character she plays comes across more as distraught and hysterical than anything else. It's hard to imagine that anyone, regardless of how much they loved her, could believe in her. To make matters worse some of the dialogue she delivers is awful. There isn't an actor dead or alive who could make a character like that fully believable. But part of the fault lies with Tierney herself. She spends most of her screen time looking like she's in a trance, even when she's not supposed to be in one. Many of her most emotional moments are overwrought. And there are times when she doesn't seem as involved as she should be. There are some flashes of brilliance but her work here is inconsistent.

***** 1952. Produced and directed by Otto Preminger. Robert Mitchum is seduced by Jean Simmons, the stepdaughter of a wealthy business woman. He's put on trial when Jean manages to plot her stepmother's death. A movie I worship for more than 35 years now. Rocked between the black-haired Dianne and the blonde Mary, Frank Jessup suffers the consequences of his passivity. ANGEL FACE'S screenplay resumes the vertebral column of the 1945 Fallen Angel (Fox Film Noir) but gives to the character of Diane Tremayne a relief that will haunt you for days. Masterpiece.
