A great many people--including Martin Scosese--have stated that seeing THE RED SHOES fueled their desire for a career in the arts, and over the years the film has acquired quasi-legendary status as an intellectually profound, emotionally stirring motion picture that investigates the deep personal sacrifices a career in the arts requires. But while I found the film visually stunning and interesting in concept, I also found it simplistic in its statements on the nature of art and nothing short of trivial melodrama in terms of plot.

Very loosely based on the goings-on in the famous Serge Diaghilev ballet company, the film concerns a rising dancer (Moira Shearer) and rising composer (Marius Goring) who fall under the spell of an inflexible impressario (Anton Walbrook), who leads them ... Read More

A chocolate confection of a movie.

Set in Vienna circa 1900, based on a play by Viennese playwrite Arthur Schnitzler, it's a series of vignettes more about lust than love. The vignettes flow together by having one person appearing in the next -- generally being the seducer in one, the victim in the other.

As I understand it, Ophuls moderated the promiscuous tone of Schnitzler's play. There is definitely a sense of regret and loss over these random flings despite their inevitableness.

Still, the tone is mostly light, almost flighty at times. There's a master of ceremonies (Anton Walbrook) holding the entire thing together, as well as a pretty melody by Oscar Stauss. There are even the daring intrusions of moviemaking -- a clapboard, a filmstrip with the presumed sex scene ... Read More

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp is a true rarity in moviedom, a film that is intellectually engaging, filled with life and innovation, a film that stands as a celebration of cinema, that explores the medium to the fullest. It was released not too long after Citizen Kane, and deserves to be held on the same level of esteem because of its glorious innovation and storytelling techniques. Blimp is a uniquely British film, yet universal, a film of its period(early '40's), yet light years ahead of its time. In my opinion, it demands to be seen and appreciated by a wider audience because it is unquestionably a landmark motion picture.

Comparisons between Blimp and Citizen Kane are not uncalled for. Both films are daring in their assertion that the cinematic style of a film is as important an element of the storytelling ... Read More

First of all, this Criterion-restored version is a great quality picture, clean and crisp. Second, it is a movie with an ulterior motive, that of getting the then-neutral USA into the war. While I don't think it detracts from the entertainment merits, some people do. The story begins with a German U-Boat somewhere in the northern part of Canada. It destroys a Canadian cargo ship and then refuses to help save the survivors. The commander decides to head for Hudson Bay to lay low for awhile until they can escape. They send a small crew ashore to steal supplies they will need. While the U-Boat is surfaced, it is spotted by the Canadian Air Force and destroyed. The stranded crew on shore must try to navigate their way to the 49TH PARALLEL (the line dividing the US and Canada) and the neutral U.S. where they can find freedom. The propaganda enters ... A shadowy, gaslight London row house in which the brutal slaying of an old woman once took place... A beautiful young wife whose very sanity seems to be in question... A debonair husband whose concern for his emotionally unstable bride seemingly moves him to isolate her from the world... A portrait of evil, greed, ruthless ambition... All this in the version of Gaslight you were never meant to see! Yes, in order to have a monopoly on the flashier, star-filled version of Gaslight it was releasing in 1944, MGM attempted to purchase all existing film of this quietly superior 1940 motion picture and destroy them. Thankfully MGM failed and we have this excellent classic today. Telling the tale of a Victorian murderer's sadistic efforts to convince his frail spouse that she is going insane, Gaslight sets the standard for psychological thriller. Even its very name ... DVD : Lola Montes
Lola was a wildly creative woman who kept reinventing herself to meet her ever-changing needs. Passionate, headstrong, opportunistic, shameless, amoral, she essentially flipped a not-so-ladylike finger at a repressive society and lived a fascinating life that today would garner headlines but lift few eyebrows. Her life story might even seem somewhat inspiring today -- how in the world did she have the strength? The nerve?

This gorgeous movie made in the fifties has little shock and awe factor now but back then we would have viewed it from behind our (figurative) fans. Oh my wasn't she naughty, wink wink--an attitude younger viewers probably won't understand. Today the film is definitely worth a look as a stylized piece of art. Martine Carrol, who was many times more beautiful than Lola was, did all she could do with the script, seductive and calculating ... Read More

The Mystery Collection is a cinema anthology of eleven mystery movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $9.98 for my set and that comes down to about a dollar per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.

An added bonus of this collection is the fact that many of these movies are not available on other public domain collections. An additional bonus is an episode of the Philip Marlowe radio show from 1948. A further bonus is the 1926 silent film classic The Bat. There are precious silent films available on DVD or VHS, so this is a special treat.

Anyways, here is how I rate the movies in The Mystery Collection:

Excellent:
