I first saw "Home for the Holidays" when it was released on video in 1995. A small film, lovingly directed by Jodie Foster and blessed with an extraordinary cast, I was stunned by its frenetic charm. To this day I recommend it to friends, most of whom have never heard of it. Equal parts comedy and drama, "Home for the Holidays" covers the Larson family reunion on Thanksgiving day. The oldest daughter Claudia (Holly Hunter) is a single mom just fired from her job at an art gallery in Chicago. While en route to the airport, her teenage daughter (Claire Danes) reveals her plans to have sex for the first time while mom is away.

That's just one of many subplots interwoven into this colorful tapestry, as Claudia lands in Baltimore in the arms of her parents, portrayed by the indelible ... Read More

This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews. I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people. Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. Young Jesus is portrayed by a young man with blue eyes, blond hair, and the whitest skin I've ever seen on someone from the middle east. All in all though, the movie has some cool parts and is worth watching. I would recommend it.

It's ironic, but 'Antz' may be remembered as the last great Woody Allen comedy. Like Robin Williams in 'Alladin', Z's dialog is so quintessentially Woody Allen that it's hard to believe he didn't write or ad-lib some of it. It's also a damn sight funnier than anything Woody has made himself since I can't remember when, or anything Dreamworks made, up til 'Over the Hedge'.

Some of Z's lines to the ant psychiatrist in the opening scene alone are priceless. The world might be slightly tired of Allen playing the whiny, neurotic wimp, but in 'Antz' the character who, back in 1967, tried to hold up a bank with a stick-up note which nobody could read ("I have a Gub?") is absolutely perfect.

What's more, Allen is cast alongside Sylvester Stallone (who, incidentally, was voted worst actor ... Read More

This is a great makeover (not a remake) of the English 1946 black and white film which was much closer to the Dickens original both in time and setting when it begins: South East England just after the end of the Napoleonic Wars and the Thames Estuary where one can discern the floating hulks of pensioned off warships stripped of masts and rigging and turned into holding prisons for felons awaiting transportation to Australia. In this 1998 version the time is the late twentieth century and the setting is the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico off the South Western Florida coast, faraway from the more fashionable Florida Gold Coast on the Atlantic Ocean side.

Any filmmaker today who dared to remake the 1946 film would be doomed to failure as it would be a hard, if not impossible act to follow. ... Read More

I say for the casual Mel Brooks fan, because that is what I am and it was perfect for me. You've got your best known Brooks films all right here. I ordered this when it was a DoD and I knew I was going to be off of work for a few weeks recovering from surgery. It was a perfect distraction.

To be honest, I ordered it mainly for Blazing Saddles, History of the World, Part 1 and Young Frankenstein. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed To Be or Not to Be and High Anxiety. That was a pleasant surprise.

Quality of the films is fine. If you are on the fence and the price is good, go for it.

For once, I have found a movie version of a book is BETTER than the book. I have the book, but the movie presentation makes the book a major disappointment. This movie was superbly cast with excellent performances. Our family has viewed this video repeatedly and still enjoys it. It was a great addition to our family's video library.

I purchased this movie because I saw the original years ago, and thought it was funny. I invited friends to my house to watch it, and we just couldn't stop laughing. I would tell anyone who wants a good laugh to buy it. Especially someone who grew up in a family, where food was very very important.
