I had enthusiastically looked forward to this live HD transmission and attended the performance at a local movie theatre. While there is much to enjoy in this version, the shortcomings left me with an overall lukewarm impression. A big disappointment for me was the transposition of Rudolfo's famous aria, Che gelida manina, down a half step so that it peaks at a high B instead of a C. This is as good of a place as any to explain why I think transposition in a piece such as La Boheme just does not work. Puccini used an almost "through-composed" style in his operas (following the lead of Wagner), which means all of the musical moments are seamlessly attached. Four and 1/2 stars actually, if Amazon provided that option. The sets, costumes, conducting, and singing of Vargas and Frontali are as fine as the other commentators here have claimed them to be. I draw the line, though, at the raving over Gheorghiu. It's unusual ever to hear the role of Violetta sung anywhere near close to perfection, and one doesn't experience it, sorry to say, in Gheorghiu's performance. The role calls for a prima donna assoluta, and what may have been intended by this designation was that great rarity, a singer who combined the coloratura skills demanded in Act I with the large, warm body of tone called for in Acts II and III. This DVD features two of my favorite singers. The singing is glorious, tender & heart-wrenching by both Gheorghiu and Alagna, as is their portrayal of their respective characters. Their sense of kindred spirit makes this opera come to life.

This is a magnificent presentation, so many artists and such terrific performances from all of them, the pity of it is that there have been so many other fabulous performances that have been left out, I have the original VCR issue and there are far more arias and duets than there are on the two DVD's, the magnificent aria from Jessye Norman is missing and so is Alfredo Kraus's fantastic rendition of Pourquoi me reveiller among others. I would prefer to pay a bit extra for a 3 DVD set to get the missing items. The original concert went for something like 6 hours, why can't we have it all?

Reaally enjoyed this production of La Traviata with Angela Gheorghiu. She is so good. And when she opens her full voice I think of the great Renata Tabaldi. The set,color and sound is also great. Anyone who buys it will not be disappointed. Also purchased Angela at Covent gardens and loved that one too. Mario C.

I was hoping for the definitive Traviata and was disappointed. Angela Gheorghiu is an excellent actress, and she more than looks the part. But this is not just a drama, but an opera. She has a naturally beautiful voice, but she has a too-fast, nervous vibrato which bothered me throughout the film. I thought she might settle down, but it was worse in the death scene than in the beginning. She also has the bad habit of opening her mouth too wide on some vowels--I don't mean on the top notes, but on middle tones. This sometimes makes her singing somewhat uncomfortable to watch. I have always liked Frank Lopardo, but he was not in particularly good voice the night of this recording. Leo Nucci, sadly, was simply past his prime and sounded it. It's unlikely a browser found this DVD by typing 'classics on a summer evening' , but rather having typed in Roberto Alagna and/or Angela Gheorghiu for the simple reason we have become so fond of this pair. So much so, that many of us have to restrain ourselves to keep from positively gushing about them. Here are two gorgeous people sumptuously gifted in the art of Bel Canto. Who could forget them, ever, in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore? That is if you like seeing two people actually in love, exuding passion, skill, poise, and grace. With such a fine chorus and orchestra, sensitively conducted by the maestro, it comes as a complete disappointment to hear and see the grimacing soloists. The soprano is beautiful in looks, but her libera me is more grimace than tone.
