Who would have guessed that a silent film from nearly a hundred years ago would still be one of the most poignant science fiction films ever created? Proving that story is more important than CGI, Metropolis delivers a stirring film that explores what it means to be human, and sets the stage for every robot/android/clone movie to follow (which happens to be all of them, this movie is so old!).

Newer films hopped up on CGI explosions, gross out violence (I'm talking about you, Starship Troopers) but suffering inane writing should take some lessons from this classic. A movie doesn't need a 100 million dollar budget to be a success (or a massive failure, like Waterworld). What a movie needs is compelling characters who the viewer relates to, and a story that drives them forward. ... Read More

In the back ground we see a picture of the Metropolis in 2026 that is watched over by Johhan 'Joh' Fredersen (Alfred Abel). He stole the heart of Hel from C.A. Rotwang, der Erfinder "The Inventor" (Rudolf Klien-Rogge) and married her. It was speculated that Hel fell for Joh's position of power more than love. Hel dies in child birth.

Rotwang being lonely invents a robot replacement for Hel. Rotwang loses a hand in the process. We see the machine person Hel on the poster the same way Joh saw it when he learned of its existence.

Meantime it looks like Jon's son Freder Frederson (Gustov Fröhlich) has been smitten by a kindly girl Maria (Brigitte Helm) with a mission. This mission is stated in the beginning credits as the "Head" and the "Hands" will be brought together by ... Read More

Quite possibly the greatest silent film of all time. It's right up there with Gance's NAPOLEON & Eisenstein's POTEMKIN. Better than anything Griffith ever did. Pulp fiction for the masses, yet an artistic masterpiece! Closer to Keaton than Chaplin. Not to be taken seriously, but should be taken seriously...I love this film & recommend it to all.
Certainly one of the TOP 25 GREATEST FILMS ever made.

Very interesting Early Lang productions. First half of Woman on the Moon is boring, but second half really picks up. Interesting to see how sound would have made these much better pictures, and probably half as long.

Unfortunately, I must agree with one of the other reviewers here who said that the lead actor became quite annoying. Truth be told, he was pretty annoying right from the beginning. I was very disappointed watching "Phantom." There are some beautiful visual moments to be sure, but I found that the entire enterprise was all but ruined by Alfred Abel's lead performance. The character should have been played by someone much younger and much prettier. This way, modern viewers might be more apt to forgive the sillier aspects of the plot. A wistful, handsome, dreamy young poet pining for an unobtainable woman is something understandable--if quaint. But when the wistful poet is played by a man 25 years too old who spends half of the film wearing an insipid hang-dog expression on his face, the audience simply cannot ... Read More

This dvd is pretty bad. I've seen the online trailer for the kino dvd release and the picture quality on the streaming quicktime movie was better then the picture quality on the "triple feature" dvd.

I have seen some only one other Fritz Lang movie and that was M with Peter Lorre. This movie makes that movie look like it was shot with a cell phone camera and put on You Tube. I am not saying that M wasn't a great movie, I am saying that Metropolis is PROFETIC!!! The story is classic and wildly appropriate in today's mess of a world. The filming was so perfect that you would think it was done yesterday.

Fritz Lang took the available technology and gave us larger than life buildings, explosions, robots, flooding and even a PICTURE PHONE...That's right, a picture-phone...How did he even have an idea about that? This movie pulled technology for film making to the absolute limits. Star Wars is probably the best "modern" example of what I am talking about here and to be honest, Metropolis looks better.

I rented this movie while out with some friends. We watched it and all agreed it was great. We liked the area in which it was taped(desert, cactus, sand). It made it all seem very true to life. I liked the idea that this movie had well known and very professional actors. The movie is about two guys who are traveling, they run across two mexicans( a women and a man). They get entangled in a drug smuggling ring which only leads to more and more problems for these guys. The border patrol, the local Sheriff, the mexican police and the drug dealers all become involved. It's great. I recommend this movie to anyone. There's a little violence, but it doesn't contain any sex scenes, bloody battles or offensive language.
