What stands out about this disc is how scrupulous Cliburn is in avoiding any scratches. I cant find anything close to an error, in either piece. It's a marvel of a recording. Not only that, the clarity of his playing per se is a marvel to behold. The pedal never blurs anything together. Runs were articulate. The orchestra was also crisp and sharp. The only extremely minor thing I could find wrong with this piece is that sometimes Cliburn slows down during fast passages, when a more brusque approach would have worked. Perhaps a more impersonal, mechanical, or machine-like approach would have made the fast passages more fluent, more in tempo. These slowdowns can be found in the first movement of Tchaikovsky. The Rachmaninoff was also clean but slow.

Scheherazade is performed a LOT. Fritz Reiner was well-aware of this fact in 1960 when he conceived this historic recording. As a consequence, he fostered no desire to yield just another run-of-the-mill performance. Here's a blurp from the notes which explains his subsequent efforts more fully: "Some weeks before the actual recording was made, most of the existing recordings of the music were studied, re-studied, judged and re-judged. The best were very good, but short of that perfection for which all mortals strive. One version reveled in buttery sound and not always accurate execution; another proferred razor-sharp execution and equally ear-rending decibel content; still a third beckoned you from afar with a 'concert-hall' pickup, and so it went. This review will be in fragments, as this is how thoughts come to me when listening to this remarkable CD. As I type this, I am listening to it on my iPod, where you can hear the breathing of the musicians, the gentle scratch of the bow on the strings. It is an intimate experience. The deeply impactful movie "Wit" uses parts of Mirror in Mirror in the soundtrack, and that was our introduction to this music. The search ensued, the CD purchased, and it is one of the gems in our large music collection. It transcends genre, and time. My dad passed away early last year from a stroke - when he was in hospice, we played this music for him on his last day. It seemed like the most peaceful, soothing, spiritual music that we owned. Sibelius: Finlandia/Tone Poems - No Finn in America should be without this. Thanks to Amazon and the seller, it brought me back 50 years ago when I was a child with Mom. The old record she played until it wore out.

This is absolutely my favorite CD that we bought for our baby! We've bought quite a few classical-music-for-baby compilations, and this is far and away the best. The music is fun, flirty, stimulating, sweet, and beautifully performed. It's not syrupy, dumbed-down, or played on electronic instruments like some of those other compilations. We listen to it all the time. I now buy this as a baby shower gift for everyone I know!

Part of MTT's recent "Revolutions in Music" series, this DVD is perhaps the best of the bunch. Much of it is shot in Russia in such colorful locations as the Mariinsky Theater and Rimsky-Korsakov's apartment, both in St. Petersburg, and in the Russian countryside in a search for the roots of Stravinsky's masterpiece. One of those sources is found in the opera "Mlada" of Stravinsky's teacher Rimsky-Korsakov. MTT and the San Fransisco Sym. provide a fascinating comparison of passages from "Mlada" with Stravinsky's earlier ballet "The Firebird," making it clear where all Igor's three early masterpieces find their inspiration. This CD made you feel like you could just sit in the bleachers and watch the band come by. Their circus music was delightful and a great mixture so it was never boring. My husband and I as well as the children and grandchildren loved the CD during a circus party we were having while on vacation.
