Sir Adrian Boult in both the Enigma Variations and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, what more could anyone ask. How about Sir John Barbiolli in the Cockaigne Overture. With performances like these you can easily forgive the slight lapse in sound quality. I had all 5 Marches scattered on 5 different discs. Now they are all together with some great performances of Elgar masterpieces. At the price, there is no going wrong here.

To me, the Fourth is by far the most interesting and moving of the Shostakovich symphonies, truly a signature work of the 20th century. In the video interview on the bonus DVD Berhard Haitink rightly objects to the hackneyed equation of the works sound world with industrial machinery and marching masses, clichés that are unfortunately the mainstay of the illustrated talk that fills most of that same DVD. It is an interesting idea to complement a recording with such an introduction, but this one will give you little more than a general lesson in Soviet history and a rehashing of well-known facts from Shostakovich's life at that period. It does very little to deepen understanding of the music, and may even get in the way by planting unwanted associations in the listeners mind, say, with imagery from ... Read More

This is a fine reading of the lesser-appreciated Brandenburgs. While the 3rd is the "greatest hit" of the six, I think these last two are also beautiful in their own way.
Marriner sure has the Touch, and despite this performance being on modern and not period instruments, I prefer it to some of the more "faithful" BCs I've heard, mainly due to the heartfelt perfection of the playing. Bach was all about perfection, on many levels, and these guys bring home how incredibly layered and harmonically rich these pieces are.
Hard to pass up for five bucks.

What stands out about this disc is how scrupulous Cliburn is in avoiding any scratches. I cant find anything close to an error, in either piece. It's a marvel of a recording. Not only that, the clarity of his playing per se is a marvel to behold. The pedal never blurs anything together. Runs were articulate. The orchestra was also crisp and sharp.

The only extremely minor thing I could find wrong with this piece is that sometimes Cliburn slows down during fast passages, when a more brusque approach would have worked. Perhaps a more impersonal, mechanical, or machine-like approach would have made the fast passages more fluent, more in tempo. These slowdowns can be found in the first movement of Tchaikovsky.

The Rachmaninoff was also clean but slow.

This collection in some bizarre way became "standard" version of force-fed Beethoven. It is well recorded but I prefer fresher and less pompous interpretations.
I especially liked this Beethoven Symphonies 1,2,3,4,5,6 and Art Galleries of the Time, 2DVDs+3CDs Ultimate MosaicDVD Collection
Beethoven's music is full of emotions but when it is overturned with grotesque oversized, overemphasized emotions the entire performance sound hysterical.

Scheherazade is performed a LOT. Fritz Reiner was well-aware of this fact in 1960 when he conceived this historic recording. As a consequence, he fostered no desire to yield just another run-of-the-mill performance. Here's a blurp from the notes which explains his subsequent efforts more fully:

"Some weeks before the actual recording was made, most of the existing recordings of the music were studied, re-studied, judged and re-judged. The best were very good, but short of that perfection for which all mortals strive. One version reveled in buttery sound and not always accurate execution; another proferred razor-sharp execution and equally ear-rending decibel content; still a third beckoned you from afar with a 'concert-hall' pickup, and so it went. To capture the Arabian temptress in all her glittering ... Read More

I thoroughly enjoy these CDs. I tried collecting Mozart in portions over time, but his repertoire is just way too large to manage for amateurs like me. It is well worth buying the whole collection in one purchase.

Excellent product..one of the standard anthologies available for studying Music History.

One caveat, if you're using Hanning's Concise Grout as a companion text, be sure to match the correct edition of the anthology + recordings to the correct edition of the text.
